Tie rods on aging BMWs should be replaced to avoid failure and to make your alignment guy happy. There is nothing more upsetting for an alignment tech than a seized tie rod.
Connected to the steering rack, when these begin to go, there is often slack in the steering or popping ball joints. This could end up leading to extremely hazardous conditions and lead to loss of steering control.
