There are a few reason having a catch can is an upgrade for a vehicle, from a separator system that no longer works to one that was never there. Modern day emissions regulations require the use of a closed crankcase ventilation (PCV) system to recirculate combustion blow-by gases from the crankcase back in to the intake to be burned. Unfortunately, these blow by gases contain water vapor (which is a byproduct of combustion) and pick up oil mist from and the windage cloud and cam lubrication system as they travel through the crank case. Due to less than 100% effective air/oil separation in the stock PCV system, some oil mist and water vapor gets carried back to the intake tract and over time cause oil deposits and carbon buildup in the intake manifold, intake ports, and on the back of intake valves. All will eventually lead to poor performance and reduced fuel economy, and the presence oil mist can in the intake charge even increase the risk of engine damaging detonation.

The catch can utilizes a strategically designed 4 chamber baffle plate system engineered to create multiple changes in the direction of airflow to cause oil droplets to fall out of suspension, maximizing the efficiency of the PCV air/oil separation. A dipstick is integrated into the cap so you can monitor the oil level, and the can is easily serviced. At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. The ECS Tuning Oil Catch Can is CNC machined from billet 6061-T6 aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish for lasting durability and appearance, and includes everything needed for an OEM-like fully reversible installation.

The black anodized aluminum mounting bracket places the catch can in a location that looks like it should be there from the factory as well as pre-formed silicone hoses for a clean installation.

il venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and the N20 engine is not immune from this. The existing stock system does a poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. Performance issues are caused by oil sneaking by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media and chemical blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen. Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine. The Mishimoto Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. It installs on the cooler side of the engine with a dedicated bracket and new oversized vent lines. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles. It's no secret that BMW turbo motors can suffer from oil control problems causing oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves and the VANOS system, lowering the effective octane, and generally degrading engine performance. The higher your boost levels the more apparent these problems become. The solution to this problem has finally arrived. The BMS oil catch can. While there are other catch cans on the market they all fall short in various areas. Some are mounted on the hot/turbo side of the motor preventing proper vapor condensation. Others utilize hoses that are too small and runs that are too long to allow proper PCV ventilation causing internal motor/ring sealing issues. Some have insufficient or no internal baffle system while others have internal baffles systems that are too restrictive. Some even bypass the PCV system all together venting crankcase gas and odor to the atmosphere. Most are simply repackaged oil catch cans from smaller / lower power motors shoehorned into place in the turbo BMW engine bay. To solve these problems BMS designed their oil catch can kit from the ground up specifically for the turbo BMW application. It features 100% CNC machining with zero welding for a precision fit and long life. The can itself is guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. The hoses exceed the OEM PCV piping in diameter and that flow rate is maintained throughout the entire oil catch can ensuring no excessive crankcase pressure buildup. BMW's B58 engine has been very successful and has proved to be a reliable powerplant that is highly capable of producing some crazy power figures. Unfortunately, in true BMW fashion, the B58 engine does have a few problems that can become serious issues if not addressed quickly. One of these issues is the oil filter housing cracking and leaking engine oil and/or coolant. BMW chose to construct the oil filter housing out of plastic and the housing tends to split if the cap is tightened too tight or even just over time as the plastic becomes brittle from numerous heat cycles. Another common failure point is the multiple gaskets that seal the housing to the engine block and between the housing and the engine oil cooler. when these seals fail, you will notice coolant and/or oil loss, or even the mixing of engine oil with coolant. There is also the possibility of your oil filter collapsing inside of the filter housing and preventing proper oil filtration and flow, sometimes clogging the small oil channels in your filter housing as the oil filter begins to fall apart. Though this is more common with vehicles that see extended oil change intervals, such as 12K+ mile oil changes, we have seen some failures as soon as 5,000 miles after an oil change! Whatever the cause may be, the solution is almost always the same, replacement of the whole oil filter housing. We have put together a kit including the basic components needed to replace your oil filter housing and get your BMW back on the road! Included: Genuine BMW Engine Oil Filter Housing - Includes a new cap, seals, and oil filter (oil cooler not included and must be reused or purchased new - see BMW # 11428583901) Oil Cooler Mounting Hardware Oil Drain Plug Gasket Intake Manifold Gaskets Throttle Body Gasket Transmission Fill Plug (For Automatic models) Genuine BMW Installation Hardware Not included in this kit are the fluids that will need to be replaced or topped off after the installation of your new oil filter housing, including engine oil, G48 or HT-12 coolant (depending on what your BMW came with from the factory), and automatic transmission fluid for models with the ZF 8HP transmission.

BMW's B58 engine has been very successful and has proved to be a reliable powerplant that is highly capable of producing some crazy power figures. Unfortunately, in true BMW fashion, the B58 engine does have a few problems that can become serious issues if not addressed quickly. One of these issues is the oil filter housing cracking and leaking engine oil and/or coolant. BMW chose to construct the oil filter housing out of plastic and the housing tends to split if the cap is tightened too tight or even just over time as the plastic becomes brittle from numerous heat cycles. Another common failure point is the multiple gaskets that seal the housing to the engine block and between the housing and the engine oil cooler. when these seals fail, you will notice coolant and/or oil loss, or even the mixing of engine oil with coolant. There is also the possibility of your oil filter collapsing inside of the filter housing and preventing proper oil filtration and flow, sometimes clogging the small oil channels in your filter housing as the oil filter begins to fall apart. Though this is more common with vehicles that see extended oil change intervals, such as 12K+ mile oil changes, we have seen some failures as soon as 5,000 miles after an oil change! Whatever the cause may be, the solution is almost always the same, replacement of the whole oil filter housing.
