Now that BMWs popular S54 engine (found in the 2001-06 BMW M3, 2001-02 MZ3 and 2007-08 MZ4) are getting older, it's important to keep an eye on particular items. One such point is the S54 Vanos oil line. Normally thought of as a worry-free item, it has proven to put the damper on many track days. Rogue's stainless steel braided VANOS line replaces the factory BMW part number 11367837614 (current MSRP from BMW is $128.08!) The high pressure (1200psi) control system of the S54 vanos system is used to ensure responsive and accurate camshaft adjustments. The added complexity of the high oil pressure used on the S54 vanos means more opportunities for failures. Some customers have encountered the high pressure hardline fail at the track, spraying oil all over their engine compartment, ending their day. Rogue Engineering's S54 Vanos Oil Line is built in their Upper Saddle River, NJ facility, and tested to over 3000psi. Using their stainless steel braided hose with the proper banjo fittings, this a direct replacement for the factory line. It's no secret that N55 BMW turbo motors can suffer from oil control problems causing oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves and the VANOS system, lowering the effective octane, and generally degrading engine performance. The higher your boost levels the more apparent these problems become. The solution to this problem has finally arrived. The BMS oil catch can. While there are other catch cans on the market they all fall short in various areas. Some are mounted on the hot/turbo side of the motor preventing proper vapor condensation. Others utilize hoses that are too small and runs that are too long to allow proper PCV ventilation causing internal motor/ring sealing issues. Some have insufficient or no internal baffle system while others have internal baffles systems that are too restrictive. Some even bypass the PCV system all together venting crankcase gas and odor to the atmosphere. Most are simply repackaged oil catch cans from smaller / lower power motors shoehorned into place in the turbo BMW engine bay. To solve these problems BMS designed their oil catch can kit from the ground up specifically for the turbo BMW application. It features 100% CNC machining with zero welding for a precision fit and long life. The can itself is guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. The hoses exceed the OEM PCV piping in diameter and that flow rate is maintained throughout the entire oil catch can ensuring no excessive crankcase pressure buildup. The BMS OCC retains the factory fully closed loop PCV operation preventing any PCV vapor from leaking to the atmosphere. The mounting locations are selected to minimize the line length, allow more efficient operation, and retain a stealth look. Install takes around 20 minutes, includes all required hardware, and is 100% reversible. Oil venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and now even more so on the turbocharged N54 and N55 engines. The existing stock system does a very poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. We're seeing a lot more 135 and 335 cars with drivability and performance issues because oil has sneaked by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen.

Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. The Burger Tuning oil catch can is the best we have seen so far. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine.

The BMS Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. It installs on the cooler side of the engine with a dedicated bracket and new oversized vent lines. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). The BMS OCC also has a factory-like appearance. Since BMS designed their catch can from scratch they can guarantee it fits and performs correctly for the N54/N55 engine, unlike other catch cans on the market that are poorly retrofitted from other applications and under-sized for the N54 engine.

Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles

However, when the demand for power is requested, the power pulley kit allows for the freed power to become apparent.  The term "power" pulley is a bit of a misnomer. Underdrive pulleys actually free up power by reducing the drag caused by the accessories.  These pulleys are based off a calculated percentage from factory dimensions, so that particular component speeds are safely reduced without affecting their true purpose.

Rogue Engineering Power Pullies are CNC machined from 6061-T6, heat treated aluminum and specially coated with a MIL-A-8625 Type III hard coat anodize finish. This kind of anodizing is not to be confused with a Type II cosmetic anodize finish (typical colors such as red, blue, silver, green, etc.). The hard coat anodize finish actually builds a small surface layer on top of the aluminum, preventing wear.

Oil venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and now even more so on the turbocharged N54 and N55 engines. The existing stock system does a very poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. We're seeing a lot more 135 and 335 cars with drivability and performance issues because oil has sneaked by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen.

Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. The Burger Tuning oil catch can is the best we have seen so far. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine.

The BMS Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. It installs on the cooler side of the engine with a dedicated bracket and new oversized vent lines. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). The BMS OCC also has a factory-like appearance. Since BMS designed their catch can from scratch they can guarantee it fits and performs correctly for the N54/N55 engine, unlike other catch cans on the market that are poorly retrofitted from other applications and under-sized for the N54 engine.

Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles

Rogue Engineering Power Pullies are CNC machined from 6061-T6, heat treated aluminum and specially coated with a MIL-A-8625 Type III hard coat anodize finish. This kind of anodizing is not to be confused with a Type II cosmetic anodize finish (typical colors such as red, blue, silver, green, etc.). The hard coat anodize finish actually builds a small surface layer on top of the aluminum, preventing wear.

Still looking for more power after bolt-ons? High performance camshafts from Schrick are the way to go. These proved to be an excellent upgrade on our first Project E46 M3 and very similar to the stock E46 M3 CSL cams. Smooth as stock idle with a linear increase in horsepower from midrange all the way to redline. Peak gain was 15hp with no loss in low end torque. The duration of the intake cam is 280 and the exhaust is 272 with 12.5mm valve lift. These are the new "cast" cams from Schrick which require new rocker arms (Schrick or BMW part #11337833859). Professional installation is a must due to the intricacies with the double VAN0S.

For the US E36 M3. Schrick 264/256 degree camshafts boost mid-high end power for that extra motivation at higher rpm. Low-end torque is not seriously affected due to the M50/M52s VAN0S System. And, higher profile cams work extremely well with an upgraded intake and exhaust. When upgrading the cams there are other areas you must take into consideration. Higher-flow fuel injectors, larger mass-air sensor, and custom programming are strongly recommended. Turner Motorsport sells complete intake & cam packages that boost power to over 290hp. One major hurdle for a track-only car is the limitation of the hydraulic valve lifters in the M50, S50-US, M52, S52-US, M52TU, and M54 engines. These effectively limit your revs to 7200-7300 RPM as the valves 'float' at higher revs, leading to piston-valve contact. By converting to a machined solid lifter, and upgrading other areas of the engine, you can configure the valve train to withstand high RPM running. Not only can you tune for more power, you can help prevent damage during a mild mechanical over-rev.

This kit includes the mechanical spacers to convert hydraulic lifter tappets to solid lifters. The lifter bucket remains in place with the Schrick solid tappet replacing the original. These work on all M50, M52, S50, S52 and M54 engines and were proven in normally aspirated as well as supercharged engines. A custom camshaft is required.

Professional installation and setup is mandatory as these require complete assembly of the head, checking valve lash, then dis-assembly and machining of the Schrick tappet to spec. This kit includes enough spacers for 24 valves. We also carry individual parts, if you are looking for single pieces. This price is for a full set of 24.

These Schrick camshafts are the same specs as the stock US S50 cams -
Intake: 252 degree, 10.2mm lift
Exhaust: 244 degree, 9.5mm lift

With original S50/S52 cams in short supply, and a new set running over $2,000 from BMW, you can source new M3-spec cams from Schrick. These are the same specs as the US S50 engine and very close to the stock S52 cams. These make a great upgrade for M50 (325i, 525i) and M52 engines (328i, 528i) with the proper tuning. These bolt in just like the stock and M3 cams with no special hardware upgrades required - use your stock valve springs, lifters, etc. But for reliability we recommend replacing the lifters, valve springs, and retainers with new stock parts on high mileage engines.

These cams are a direct replacement for the stock cams and give a solid 15+ horsepower boost at the top end and great midrange torque increases too! More gains can be expected with intake and header upgrades and custom software tuning. A slightly lumpy idle is expected at cold start but will be smooth once at operating temperature. Schrick's most aggressive cam for the M20 engine. The 304-degree will make big power at the top but there will be a loss of low-end torque so this cam is only recommended for cars that see most of their time above 4000 rpm.
