Not all diagnostic scan tools are the same. The cheap ones you find at catalog outlet stores are generic and give you generic information (sometimes not even that). BMW actually has very specialized diagnostic systems that they only share with dealers. The factory diagnostic tools require specialized programs on dedicated laptops that are a pain for the average DIYer to set up and use. The Schwaben BMW diagnostic tool is designed specifically for BMW and MINI. It's not generic and packs some serious features in its small case. We've used this in our service department and were very impressed with the depth of its capabilities. It has features that only the factory ISTA/INPA programs have. Some days you just want to put the pedal to the floor with unlimited amounts of exhaust volume with your high revving 6 cylinder. Starting off from a stop with the valves open there is a significant increase in volume over the valves closed. When entering in to the 2000 rpm range you begin to experience the slightest taste of how satisfying the exhaust is going to sound. As you approach 4,000 rpms and higher you now have started to open up the can of worms, you can feel the free-flowing path of the exhaust with limited to no resistance, far superior to the factory exhaust. Anything after 6500 rpms is an absolute statement of exhaust. Over 6500 rpm is a sonorous note that lives rent free in the enthusiasts mind that can make a believer out of anyone who doubted the capable E46 M3. Once you are done having your fun and have experienced your S54 more than you ever have all you do is make one button click on your valve controller and you are back to high class and refinement.
