All vehicles will lose some degree of performance due to heat soak under the right operating conditions.  Engine management systems constantly monitor operating conditions and modifying parameters based on sensor inputs. BMW integrated the intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing on models such as the E39 M5, and, being sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover, this is less than ideal for performance applications. Absorbing excess heat from its surroundings, the MAF can’t shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads an inaccurately high intake air temperature. Compensating for this false hot air measurement, the ECU pulls timing and runs a richer fuel mixture, resulting in a significant loss of torque.

What can you do?  Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can properly measure incoming air temps and where it's less prone to heat soak. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly.  The result is you’ll experience reduced torque loss and more consistent power output when you’re pushing your engine hard. 

The Turner engineering team was initially skeptical of the claimed performance benefits of this modification. They first set out validate the functionality and performance benefit of a temp sensor relocation. Replicating stop-and-go traffic heat soak in a 2001 540i was a simple task in a controlled environment - their dynometer. First the car was heat soaked to simulate being stuck in traffic or moving at low speeds by running the car four times on the dyno with the dyno's cooling fans disabled. The fans were then turned on for three more runs to observe the recovery rate once air flow was reintroduced. The test: following this procedure once with a stock IAT, and once with their relocation kit in place. 

The result? Turner recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm through use of their relocation kit, with even greater recovery to be found for M5 owners. Here are the heat soak-related torque losses Turner experienced:

The Turner engineering team designed a complete plug and play kit (unlike all other options on the market) that makes for quick, easy, and reversible installation. Weather-sealed connectors keep out the elements, while sheathed wiring offers a clean appearance underhood. With a harness nearly 3 feet long - the Turner IAT relocation kit offers flexibility in positioning, but not too long that you're left with unsightly excess wiring. Turner recommends positioning the sensor in a location away from engine heat, but still within the intake ducting to achieve accurate intake temp readings - such as the far side of the base of the airbox. Vehicles with cold air intakes with cone-style filters can even position the sensor in the end of the filter. Simply drill a hole in your (cool) location of choice and plug in the harness. When BMW began using the "Drive-by-wire" throttle system in 2001, a lot of people cringed. The Drive-by-wire system uses electronics to replace the mechanical cable throttle of the past. This means the electronics between the accelerator pedal and motorized throttle must interpret what your right foot does, and ultimately decides how the engine will respond. Although advanced in it's technology and engineering, many of us agree that the Drive-by-Wire equipped BMWs feel unresponsive and lack the crisp, sharp throttle response that older BMWs had with a traditional throttle cable. That's where the Sprint Booster comes in.

The Sprint Booster is an in-line "plug and play" module, that remaps the Drive-by-Wire throttle curve to be much quicker than stock programming. It removes the "lag" or delay that exists in the stock electronic mapping. The result is sharper, quicker throttle response and immediate power delivery.

How does it work? The Sprint Booster listens to the pedal input signal, and sends an improved signal to the ETC (electronic throttle control) which has been amplified or "boosted", so that the throttle is more responsive throughout the entire rpm range.

You may be able to upgrade the Shark Injector file to another version to better meet your tuning needs. Depending on the model we may have better tunes for things such as intakes, larger air sensors, camshafts, headers, and others. For a small fee the current Shark Injector tune can be removed and a new file added instead (the original Shark file you were using would no longer be available). To do this, we need the car restored to stock settings with the current Shark Injector and then returned to us (updating via USB is not yet available). Sharks that were not Restored to stock cannot be upgraded and the unit will be returned to you (at your expense). We also perform other work on the Shark Injector while it is here, including diagnostic tests and re-packaging with the most current instructions. The Shark that you get back is virtually new and ready to be reinstalled!

Our newest M3 performance software was developed on the dyno to create maximum power and torque using premium 91 octane fuel and revising the torque limiters in the ECU, although even more power is to be had using 93 octane fuel. The software makes changes to the ECU's maps and algorithms for fuel injection, ignition timing, VANOS and camshaft movement, and transitional fueling. We modify the maps for part throttle and full throttle so you get better response and more torque at all RPM, with serious power to be found over 4,000 RPM. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S54 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine. The top speed limiter is removed, and rev limiter lifted to 8,250 RPM.

Bosch Motorsport and Turner Motorsport have teamed up to offer an affordable, plug-and-play, and fully tunable stand alone ECU system for the E46 M3. The Bosch Motorsport ECU opens the doors for unlimited tuning potential and instant power and reliability benefits over the stock BMW MSS54 ECU. The Bosch Motorsport plug-n-play ECU cuts through all of the hassle and additional work that normally comes with switching to a stand alone management system. It also leapfrogs the factory system in advanced tuning and reliability. This is a must-have system for owners of E46 M3 race and track cars. Pound for pound the factory ECU just doesn't stack up.

The advantages of the Bosch Motorsport system are ENORMOUS:

The factory MSS54 ECU is a compromise on multiple levels. It's purpose is NOT to make large amounts of horsepower or allow access to its internal code for changes. There have been great breakthroughs in reverse engineering the stock ECU but the fact remains it was never intended to be a true race ECU. The factory ECU and oxygen sensors are there for controlling emissions and fuel economy. The emphasis is on control - it is in BMW's best interest to lock out changes to the ECU so that the car conforms to emissions and fuel economy standards. While mild tuning for the street is not a problem (such as with our Shark Injector software), the factory ECU will fight major changes every step of the way.

Our partnership with Bosch Motorsport goes back a long time. When we switched from a full stand alone to the Bosch ECU on our E46 M3 racecars we instantly made more power. When we realized there was a need for a plug-and-play alternative to the stock E46 M3 ECU the Bosch MS4.0 ECU was the first to come to mind. Stand-alone race ECU systems are ideal for making large amounts of reliable power but until now they were too expensive and too complicated. A full stand lone system will cost tens of thousands of dollars and require hours of installation and fabrication work for the sensors, wiring harnesses, communications platforms, and more. Our Bosch Motorsport system gives you all of the control of a stand-alone but works with the existing wiring and sensors in the E46 M3, including the instrument cluster and dash! This is thanks to the special translator interface box that we developed and allows the Bosch ECU to communicate with the stock VAN0S, drive-by-wire, cooling and oil systems, ABS, and more. The Bosch ECU works with the more advanced Bosch LSU4.9 wideband oxygen sensors which replace the two stock pre-cat O2 sensors. We strongly recommend that you replace your spark plugs and ignition coils with the latest BMW part numbers before installing this system. You can be up and running with the complete Bosch system in about an hour! Yes, one hour! Plug in the ECU and translator box and swap the front O2 sensors and you're done. You can revert back to stock just as easily. To get reliable power means removing interference from emissions equipment or OBD oversight and eliminate the possibility of a race-ending limp mode or fault code. The Bosch ECU system eliminates layers of complexity to give you what you really want: power and control.

Our Bosch ECU system comes pre-installed with a base engine map that closely matches your existing engine spec. We developed multiple tuning maps on our Dynapack chassis dyno using popular bolt-on S54 power upgrades: headers, intakes, cams, superchargers, etc. Straight away our base tune gained 24hp. With headers and cat delete, over 50! Our base supercharger file gained almost 50hp more than the tune that came with the kit! A 3.5L stroker engine gained over 30hp from the best file supplied by the engine builder! We provide you with a base map closely matched with your existing modifications. You then have the ability, if needed, to make adjustments to optimize the output using the Bosch PC software. Unlike the factory ECU there is no limit to the number of flashes you can make on the Bosch ECU.

The software for running without cats includes special programming tweaks that will ignore certain readings from the post-cat O2 sensors and rely on the data from the first set of O2 sensors and the EGT sensor. The post-cat O2 sensors must still remain in place in the exhaust.

Turner Motorsport Power Pulleys 
Underdrive Power Pulleys work to 'free up' horsepower. Any accessory that spins from the main drive belt is using up power. That's power that could otherwise be used to move the car. By giving some of that power back to the engine, you can make the car faster! We measured 10.7 whp at 6960 rpm and 8.1 lb-ft of torque at 5550 on a 1995 M3. Race pulleys deliver even more power.

The T2 M3 software was developed during our 2-year campaign with the E46 M3 in the SCCA T2 club racing class (multiple wins and 3rd in 2006 Runoffs, highest finishing E46 M3) From 2013 the E46 M3 was reclassified to the T3 class. The software makes changes to the ECU's maps and algorithms for fuel injection, ignition timing, VANOS and camshaft movement, and transitional fueling. We modify the maps for part throttle and full throttle so you get better response and more torque at all RPM. The rev limit is raised to 8,600 RPM rev limit and the top speed limiter is removed. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S54 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine. This software is a more aggressive tune than our standard street and Race software and additional engine maintenance and care is advised, including more frequent engine oil changes, oil analysis, valve adjustments, and other maintenance common to race-only vehicles. The minimum octane for this software is 93 AKI.

The Shark Injector plugs into the diagnostic port inside the E46 cabin. With the battery charger supplying power, press the Upgrade button and within minutes the ECU is reflashed with the new performance tune. No other software product on the market comes close to how easy it is to install. You can use the Restore button to re-install the stock BMW software at any time. Detailed instructions are included. A capable battery charger is required for the installation. The charger provides backup power supply to the regular car battery during installation. It must be capable of holding a continuous 10amp charge for the full installation (15-20 minutes).
