Replace the Achilles heel of your factory cooling system with a stout and reliable mechanical thermostat setup.
The factory E46 thermostat housing is a combined unit featuring a plastic housing and a built in thermostat that you cannot replace separately. These plastic all-in-one units are commonly know to crack or fail causing a headache, a trip on the tow truck and possible damage to your engine.
Taking cues from the reliable M50 thermostat setup we designed a an assembly that not only converts your plastic housing into a billet aluminum unit but also swaps out the integrated thermostat for a separate replaceable thermostat. The ability to swap out thermostats separately from the whole housing opens up doors to changing thermostats to different temperature ratings based on your application while also providing lower maintenance costs. No longer do you have to replace the whole housing but just the thermostat itself.
The billet housing is designed to be utilized with E46 M3 upper and lower radiator hoses and also features -16 ORB connections for custom radiator hoses. The thermostat regulates the temperature of your coolant. At a predetermined temperature the thermostat will open to let coolant flow to the radiator and be cooled by airflow or the fan. Over time the thermostat will become stuck open or closed, leading to a variety of issues. A closed thermostat will never allow the coolant to reach the radiator and be cooled. Hot coolant will continue to circulate through the engine and absorb even more heat until boiling and the system overheats. An open thermostat is not as bad but is still not ideal - the coolant is always cool, with the temp needle always reading in the cool range. This tells the ECU to richen the fuel mixture to bring the car up to normal operating temp. So your fuel mileage decreases and the car runs rich.
Replacing the thermostat is an easy but messy job. This thermostat includes the main o-ring (but a housing gasket may be required). Consider replacing the housing and any associated temp sensors while you're in there. The cooling system will need to be bled after.
Most of the engines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s use the same thermostat design and they are interchangeable among the different temperatures. This is the 68*C thermostat, at the bottom of the temperature range. It should only be used in racing situations such as when deleting the engine fan. However, keep in mind that BMW spent a lot of time engineering the cooling system to work in all kinds of conditions and changing thermostat temperature is not recommended to fix any failures in the cooling system.

Mishimoto E46 Aluminum Radiator features -
Mishimoto radiators address all of the defects of the stock E46 radiator in a well-engineered and price-competitive direct replacement unit. The Mishimoto radiator is an all aluminum design that replaces the factory plastic and aluminum stock radiator. The stock plastic end tanks are notorious for cracking and leaks whereas the Mishimoto has aluminum end tanks that will never fail. Mishimoto can also build 30% more coolant capacity into the a radiator that fits in the original location with no modifications. More coolant volume means the fluid is not heat soaked for as long (less super heated fluid circulating through the engine). For a direct replacement performance radiator, the Mishimoto is hard to beat!
Mishimoto was established in 2003 as a supplier of cooling components for drift and rally cars. Their radiators and intercoolers soon found a strong following in the hyper competitive drift scene where high horsepower and prolonged high revs dictate the need for durable and robust cooling solutions. This electric fan for the E46 takes the place of the stock engine-mounted fan and offers several advantages -
The stock engine fan is mounted on the water pump shaft and spins with the engine. Torque from the engine is used to spin the fan, which could otherwise be used to power the car. It's not a lot of lost power and torque - Mishimoto measured a max gain of 6whp - but sometimes every little bit helps. And the other advantages of an electric fan make it a smart move.
The Mishimoto electric fan uses a 16" slim profile electric fan that flows at 1,850 cubic feet per minute (CFM). The shroud and frame are black powedercoated steel and mounts to existing points on the radiator for a seemless install. Mishimoto has confirmed fitment with stock radiators as well as their own Performance and X-Line aluminum radiators. Hardware and instructions are included.
An electric fan must be powered by a 12v source. A fan controller kit is optional and is activated by coolant temp. This is the preferred setup method but other types of controls may also be used. There are two styles of Mishimoto fan controllers - a sensor located in a 1/8" NPT plug or as a 6" probe inserted between the fins on the radiator. For BMW applications, the NPT plug is usually the best and Mishimoto has this port built into their radiator designs (most other aluminum radiators do as well). For the E46, Mishimoto has a dedicated wiring harness with the optional controller that takes power from the factory fuse panel.
