This is a small, 'dogbone' shaped piece that runs from the rear lower control arm to the hub. The lower outer ball joint is mounted in the same location and this is often replaced with the ball joint.

This lower front control arm (BMW also calls it a wishbone) is a direct replacement for the original part and is the OEM Lemforder brand. Tasked with keeping the vehicles rear end firmly mounted while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber subframe bushings were engineered to provide a balance of control while keeping the ride quality soft and supple. As a factory bushings age, they become brittle and begin to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play, or movement in the subframe. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk or "thunking" noise under acceleration and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushings with full polyurethane this play is eliminated since the subframe is being held in place by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This front left (driver side) sway bar / swaybar link fits BMW E53 X5. Ball-joint failure in the front sway bar / swaybar link on the E53 X5 is something that can't be avoided. How do you know if the link has gone bad? From inside the car you will hear a clunking noise when going over bumps. The clunk is a sure sign a ball joint (control arm, tie rod, swaybar link) has failed. Diagnosis with a set of channel-lock pliers will reveal a large amount of play in the ball joint itself.
