What can you do to get rid of this heat soak? Turner designed an IAT relocation kit that moves the intake air temp sensor to a cooler location. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly. What's better than using standard connecting rod bearings in your next engine build? Using our Turner Motorsport WPC-treated bearings! Our process begins with King Engine Bearings bearing shells. Designed with performance and load capacity in mind, King's SV Series bearings feature a Lead-free, tri-metal Silver-based overlay with a Babbitt plating made to provide seizure resistance. Ideal for extreme-load engines, it serves as an OE replacement and can be employed as a sputter replacement. Despite offering great wear and friction resistance, the engineers at Turner Motorsport saw an opportunity to further improve King's bearing design with WPC surface treatment. WPC reduces friction and adds strength, vastly enhancing the durability of critical internal engine components. From the factory, both the E90 335d and E70 X5 35d utilize a rigid alternator pulley. With each cylinder's fire, the crankshaft experiences a violent micro-acceleration. Because the alternator has a heavy internal rotor spinning at high speeds, it wants to keep spinning at a constant rate. When the engine suddenly slows down (even minutely between firing cycles), the alternator fights the belt. This constant tug-of-war results in extreme stress on your engine's belt-driven components. At best, it’s an annoying, unrefined chirp at idle; at worst, it’s a ticking time bomb for your expensive harmonic balancer.
To solve this issue, many enthusiasts choose to run a clutched alternator pulley (also called an overrunning alternator pulley). A clutched pulley allows the alternator to "freewheel" or coast when the engine slows down, completely isolating its rotational inertia from the belt drive to prevent component wear. This relay is used for the SMG system on the E46 M3 and various applications including secondary air systems on other BMW's. If you find that your SMG-equipped E46 M3 is not starting, this is one of the first places to check as it controls power to the hydraulic unit (the car will not start without hydraulics). Buy one to fix the issue and buy a second so you're not stranded in the future!

The VANOS system on your N51, N52, and N54 engine controls the valve timing inside the engine. The system is hydraulically operated based on instructions from the engine computer. It's very complex and BMW has not yet perfected the system. The VAN0S solenoid is the actuator that takes instruction from the ECU and activates the VANOS unit on the front of the engine. When the solenoid is failing (or failed) you can end up with a rough running engine, misfires, bad fuel economy, lack of power, and more. It should trigger multiple fault codes and a check engine light for misfires, camshaft control, VAN0S solenoid, boost pressure control, and maybe others. It's important to thoroughly troubleshoot fault codes but VAN0S solenoids are a known issue with these engines.
The VANOS solenoids are located on the front of the engine and may be replaced without removing many other components. In some cases, you may be able to remove the suspect one, clean it, reinstall, and reset your fault codes. If your fault codes come back it's a strong indication that a replacement is required. Or you can buy the new solenoid and replace instead of doing the work twice.
VANOS solenoid for the intake and exhaust are the same part number. Order 2 if you want to replace them both.
