BMW E93 M3 Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

Rear Toe Control Arm - E82 1M, E9X M3 This arm controls the toe alignment in the M3 rear suspension. When these bushings wear out the tire loses toe control and the tire has too much lateral in/out movement. This can make the handling feel very nervous and imprecise and like the rear end is steering itself.

The rear toe arm is sold per side (both sides are the same). We offer this as the Original BMW part.

When an E9X is lowered beyond the limits of just lowering springs, the rear wheels toe-in excessively. This excessive rear toe leads to premature wear, that many people attribute to an increase in negative camber. It has become a common belief that an extremely low vehicle will wear the tires wrong as a matter of consequence. It has become standard practice to go as low as you can and proceed to replace your tires every five to ten thousand miles. Whats more is that when the vehicle reaches a certain ride height, the factory arms become maxed out and there is no way to compensate and dial in the proper toe. You're left with an improperly aligned vehicle that is in effect worse off than it was with the stock suspension installed.

This is not only uneconomical but improper and unsafe. ECS Tuning is proud to offer a solution for this problem in the form of Rogue Engineering E9X adjustable rear toe arms. These arms allow for greater toe adjustment on vehicles that have been lowered with a coilover suspension. With the toe set properly the tires can contact the road properly this maximizes grip and minimizes wear.

E82/E9X Rear Lower Aluminum Trailing Arms (Pair)

The rear lower control arms on E82/E9X models are the weakest link in the rear suspension. The arm is made from folded sheetmetal and it bends and deforms easily. Not only will it deform from potholes and curbs, tow truck drivers love to hook onto them without realizing how weak they are. We have seen other race teams complete the box section to make them stronger. A bent arm will throw off the geometry in the suspension, potentially affecting handling and tire wear. These aluminum arms are both lighter and stronger than the factory sheetmetal arms and is the best solution for chronic bending of the stock arm. These are a direct replacement to your stock arms with no changes needed to your alignment. New high-grade hardware is included.

Note: the stock arm is designed from the factory to be intentionally weak. These arms will bend so that something else in the suspension does not break. Our race cars used the stock sheetmetal arm but we replaced them often. We found that it was better to finish a race with a bent arm than not finish due to a catastrophic failure. The ECS arms are still designed to be the weakest link but are far stronger than the factory arm and will not bend as easily.

BMW’s are known to have failure prone front thrust arm bushings.  The flexible rubber bushings, even those found in M performance models, allow significant movement of the front wheels to maximize daily driving comfort, but also allow considerable alignment change.  This results in a disconnected and numb road feel, standing between you and a confidence inspiring driving experience.  Eventually the fluid filled rubber bushings fatigue and crack due to continual deflection and ozone degradation, and eventually the damping fluid leaks out resulting in complete failure. 

For the enthusiast looking for superior performance and longevity with a crisp, confidence-inspiring driving experience, our sealed ball joint monoballs are the best solution available!  Our experience with spherical front control arm ball joints go back to those we designed and used in our IMSA E90 328i and E92 M3 racecars (GS class Champions in 2011).  We wanted to offer E31, E32, E34, E38, E39, E53, E60, E63, E64, and E83 owners similar levels of handling precision and control for the track and street. 

The bearing housing is precision CNC machined from 6061-T6 anodized aluminum and features a knurled OD to ensure a perfect press fit, and utilize a sealed OEM BMW ball joint for exceptional quality and durability, making them completely at home on both the street and track with no compromise.  We have done extensive street, autocross, and track testing to ensure the ball joint used in this bushing design excels in each setting.  The advantage of a sealed ball joint is that it eliminates all unwanted deflection while still allowing complete bind-free movement throughout suspension travel, resulting in exceptional control of wheel alignment.  What you get is superior steering precision, turn-in response, direct braking feedback, and better handling.

The stock rear upper control arms in the E8X/E9X vehicles are made of welded sheet metal and aren't very strong, usually flexing under aggressive driving and heavy torque, leading to low stability and inconsistent handling. These control arms from SPL are much stronger and feature solid rod ends, offering outstanding stability and no suspension slop normally scene from OE rubber bushings.

M3 Front Upper+Lower Control Arm Upgrade - Left and Right - E82, E9X

The front upper and lower control arms from the E9X M3 are a direct bolt-in replacement upgrade for the stock parts on the non-M E90/E91/E92/E93 3-series and E82/E88 1-series. With the M3 components the fluid-filled bushings of the standard suspension are replaced with solid rubber cores or a sealed monoball-joint, making the suspension stiffer, more responsive, and longer lasting.

This package includes:

  • M3 front upper control arms (thrust arm, tension strut) (31102283575 and 31102283576)
    The upper control arms eliminate the fluid-filled stock bushing which is very prone to leaking the fluid and cease being effective. The solid rubber M3 bushing is also a bit stiffer for more precise steering and control.
  • M3 front upper inner bushings (31102283579)
  • M3 front lower control arms (wishbone) (31102283577 and 31102283578)
    The M3 lower control arm has a sealed inner bearing instead of the rubber-isolated stock bushing. The bearing allows the lower arm to rotate freely instead of binding up. It's also a bit longer and curved slightly to give more negative camber (adds .75 of negative camber).

Optional: M3 headlight adjusting rod (37142283867). This rod corrects the headlights for your ride height. The original non-M leveling rod will not work on the new M3 control arm. This rod is required on all cars with Xenon headlights but not needed for standard halogen lights.

With the added negative camber the steering is sharper and understeer is reduced. And the stiffer bushings and bearings deflect less which also improves steering feel and response. Since all of these parts are from the M3 there is no question on quality or longevity; no doubt as to their effectiveness or reputation. There's almost no downside to this upgrade. These are intended for street cars but even lightly tracked cars will see significant benefits to the handling and response.

We offer this package with the OEM TRW brand components or with Original BMW branded parts (stamped with TRW logo).

Front Upper and Lower Control Arm Monoball Upgrade - Left And Right - E82, E89, E9X (Including M Models)

M3 upper and lower control arms are a known upgrade for non-M E82 and E9X chassis. But our Monoball Thurst Arms are even more of an upgrade over the stock M3 arms. This package bundles the Turner Monoball upper thrust arms with the stock M3 lower control arms. If there's one big fail point in the E82/E9X front suspension it's the thrust arms. The front inner thrust arm bushing is filled with dampening fluid that leaks over time. Once it's gone the bushing has the strength of a rubber band. Even though we sell two types of upgraded rubber bushings there was still room for improvement. For someone looking for superior performance and longevity these sealed monoball bushings are the best out there. 

The advantage of a monoball bearing is that it will not deflect under load. All of the rubber bushings, including the M3, move in all sorts of directions and that changes your alignment, especially when used with big brake kits or when driven hard. And when worn out, performance suffers. Our monoball sits in a CNC machined aluminum housing which has zero deflection. The monoball allows complete freedom of movement but only at the desired angles. What you get is superior steering precision, better handling from more consistent alignment, and almost infinite bushing life. And thanks to the inner liner and sealed rubber boots there's none of the extra noise or reduced service life of fully solid race bushings.

The lower M3 control arm bushings use a similar sealed monoball bushing instead of rubber. This package gives you monoball precision and performance with OE-quality components.

When an E9X is lowered beyond the limits of just lowering springs, the rear wheels toe-in excessively. This excessive rear toe leads to premature wear, that many people attribute to an increase in negative camber. It has become a common belief that an extremely low vehicle will wear the tires wrong as a matter of consequence. It has become standard practice to go as low as you can and proceed to replace your tires every five to ten thousand miles. Whats more is that when the vehicle reaches a certain ride height, the factory arms become maxed out and there is no way to compensate and dial in the proper toe. You're left with an improperly aligned vehicle that is in effect worse off than it was with the stock suspension installed.

This is not only uneconomical but improper and unsafe. ECS Tuning is proud to offer a solution for this problem in the form of Rogue Engineering E9X adjustable rear toe arms. These arms allow for greater toe adjustment on vehicles that have been lowered with a coilover suspension. With the toe set properly the tires can contact the road properly this maximizes grip and minimizes wear.

Rear Trailing Arm - Left and Right - E82, E9X Replacement stock lower trailing arm for the E82 1-series and E9X 3-series. The trailing arm is also an impact arm, and is designed to bend if the wheel takes a major impact. It can also be bent by tow truck operators looking for something to hook onto. However it happens, if the trailing arm is bent it will throw off the alignment for the rear suspension. There are rubber bushings at either end that also wear but these can be replaced separately (new arm does not include new bushings). This is the stock replacement that fits either the Left or Ride side of the vehicle.

Front Lower Control Arm - Left - E82 1M, E9X M3 This left/driver's front lower control arm # 31102283577 - also know as a wishbone. This is the control arm with the outer ball joint pointing up. This is the OEM or OE M3 part and fits E82 1M and E90/E92/E93 M3. It's also an upgrade for all non-M E82 and E9X models (except Xi) (also requires headlight rod, 37142283867).
