Catch Can

Modern day emissions regulations require the use of a closed crankcase ventilation (PCV) system to recirculate combustion blow-by gases from the crankcase back in to the intake to be burned. Unfortunately, these blow by gases contain water vapor (which is a byproduct of combustion) and pick up oil mist from and the windage cloud and cam lubrication system as they travel through the crank case. Due to less than 100% effective air/oil separation in the stock PCV system, some oil mist and water vapor gets carried back to the intake tract and over time cause oil deposits in the intake manifold, intake ports, and on the back of intake valves. All will eventually lead to poor performance and reduced fuel economy, and the presence of this oil mist in the intake charge may even increase the risk of engine-damaging detonation. Turner Motorsport in-house designed catch cans feature our vehicle specific catch can brackets for a clean, factory-like installation.

When we designed this catch we wanted to have the most function options available, the best separation method, and the easiest to service. The Turner engineered catch cans offer a pre-setup design based ion desired flow direction, however, this does not limit you to this flow. The inner baffle orientation can be easily adjusted to flow in both directions in case you decide to move this catch can to a different vehicle. A 4 chamber system baffle system inside the catch can was engineered to create multiple changes in the direction of airflow within the separator to cause oil droplets to fall out of suspension before exiting the catch can. Having a closed/recirculated design reduces oil ingestion and promotes cleaner emissions and odor-less operation.

There are a few reason having a catch can is an upgrade for a vehicle, from a separator system that no longer works to one that was never there. Due to less than 100% effective air/oil separation in the stock PCV system, some oil mist and water vapor gets carried back to the intake tract and over time cause oil deposits and carbon buildup in the intake manifold, intake ports, and on the back of intake valves.  All will eventually lead to poor performance and reduced fuel economy, and the presence oil mist can in the intake charge even increase the risk of engine damaging detonation.

With direct injected engines this problem becomes more prevalent, and the N54 in your 135i or 335i is no exception.  We're seeing a lot of N54 powered cars with drivability and performance issues due to significant carbon buildup in the intake ports and backs of intake valves.  The “factory fix” is a walnut blasting service that commonly needs performed every 30,000 to 70,000 miles.  Don't be part of this statistic!  Our shop recommends an oil catch can be installed in-line in the PCV system to help reduce the build-up of performance robbing deposits and greatly reduce the need for costly walnut blasting service and related repairs in the future.

The catch can utilizes a strategically designed 4 chamber baffle plate system engineered to create multiple changes in the direction of airflow to cause oil droplets to fall out of suspension, maximizing the efficiency of the PCV air/oil separation.  A dipstick is integrated into the cap so you can monitor the oil level, and the can is easily serviced.  At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil.  The Turner Motorsport Oil Catch Can is CNC machined from billet 6061-T6 aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish for lasting durability and appearance, and includes everything needed for an OEM-like fully reversible installation. Another feature the Turner catch can has is the ability to add on a drain kit so you no longer have to fumble around getting the fill can out of a tight space. The drain can be run down to the belly pan of your car so draining can be done at the same time you change your oil or anytime in between.

R55-R59 Oil Catch Can Kit for N18 MINI Engines

Introducing the newly updated R55 through R59 Oil Catch Can kit for MINIs equipped with the N16 or N18 engine. This kit includes a "designed-to-fit" stainless steel bracket, mounting hardware, and pre-assembled hoses for easy installation—no drilling or special tools needed. Note: This kit has been redesigned to fit directly behind the outlet of the airbox on the firewall, using the factory tab located on the firewall.

Despite skepticism from "forum experts and social hysteria," an Oil Catch Can (OCC) is essential. Many MINI owners suffer from carbon buildup on their intake valve due to oil being recycled through the intake tract. With the M7 Oil Catch Can, your MINI Cooper's engine will be protected from excessive oil and hydrocarbon buildup, preventing performance-hindering oil film and sludge. Direct injection in 2007 & up MINIs exacerbates the issue, leading to oil blow-by burning onto intake valves, resulting in power loss and expensive repairs.

By capturing excess oil vapor and particles, the M7 Oil Catch Can ensures optimal engine performance. Now with our exclusive "Exact-Fit" pre-assembled hose kit and brackets, installation is super easy.

Features:

  • Pre-assembled hose assemblies
  • Stainless steel bracket and mounting hardware
  • Eliminates intake tract oil contamination and intake valve damage
  • Prevents premature sensor failure
  • Maintains engine performance at peak levels
  • Carbon Fiber canister with billet bright aluminum top and bottom

The M7 Oil Catch Can is not only functional but also a work of automotive performance ART! It features a 100% carbon fiber housing with CNC machined billet aluminum top and bottom, adding a sharp look to your engine compartment.

All hoses, brackets, clamps, necessary fittings, and easy-to-follow detailed step-by-step instructions are included, along with an oil drain plug and an easy-to-view sight tube. The sight tube allows you to monitor the oil level in the can. The hoses are high-quality "Made in the USA" automotive grade, designed to withstand the rigors of the under-hood environment without degradation.

Oil venting and circulation continues to be a problem on BMW engines and now even more so on the turbocharged N54 and N55 engines. The existing stock system does a very poor job of separating fluid and vapor and this leads to an oily film or even small pools of oil throughout the turbos and intake. We're seeing a lot more 135 and 335 cars with drivability and performance issues because oil has sneaked by the ring seals and is coating the intake piping, intercooler, intake valves, and other critical areas. The problem is worsened with higher boost levels. Oil is excellent for lubricating moving parts but terrible when it gets into the combustion chamber, effectively lowering the octane rating and reducing performance. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media and chemical blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen. Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. This catch can is located on the cooler side of the engine where the oil will condense easier and stay in the can. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine. The Mishimoto Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. It installs on the cooler side of the engine with a dedicated bracket and new oversized vent lines. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles. This item fits the following BMWs with the N54 twin-turbo engine: 2008-2010 E82 E88 BMW 135i 2007-2010 E9X BMW 335i 335xi 2006-2010 E60 BMW 535i 535xi WARNING! Prop 65 may apply to this product. Our own shop has gone the extra step and offers media blasting of the intake valves to strip away the oily buildup we have seen.

Our shop also strongly recommends an oil catch can be installed in the line for the crankcase vent. The oil catch can traps oil as it leaves the valve cover and holds it in a canister. Whatever minimal vapors are left over in the oil is then vented back through the canister and into the intake where it is safe to be burned up in the engine or recirculated back through the system again. This is the way the system was designed! At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil. A dipstick is integrated into the cap so you can monitor the oil level. Installing one of these will avoid costly repairs in the future and help maintain your boost and performance. It's one of the smartest modifications you can make because it demonstrates a well-thought out tuning strategy and care for the condition of your engine.

The ECS Oil Catch Can is made from aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish. Multiple brackets are available so you're not limited on where to mount it. The location is key as heat will evaporate the oil and send too much vapor back into the engine (where cooler air will turn it back into fluid). The ECS OCC also has a factory-like appearance.

Note: Since the crankcase vent system is considered part of the overall emissions system, installing this may be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. While exemptions are made for track/race and off-road use, check with your local state inspection facility on using this in street-driven vehicles.

With forced induction, track use, and/or extended high RPM usage, these symptoms increase as the factory PCV system is overwhelmed, and a catch can becomes a must for your E46 M3. This kit is a direct fit making this an easy reversal if desired as well as maintaining a clean appearance by utilizing the open "smuggler's compartment" on the passenger side of the engine bay.

ECS engineers developed a catch can that utilizes a strategically designed 4 chamber baffle plate system engineered to create multiple changes in the direction of airflow to cause oil droplets to fall out of suspension, maximizing the efficiency of the PCV air/oil separation.  A dipstick is integrated into the cap so you can monitor the oil level, and the can is easily serviced.  At each oil change simply unscrew the canister and empty the trapped oil with your regular used oil.  The ECS Oil Catch Can is CNC machined from billet 6061-T6 aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish for lasting durability and appearance, and includes everything needed for an OEM-like fully reversible installation.

M7 Oil Catch Can Kit for MINIs

M7 Oil Catch Can Kit for MINIs

Newly Updated Kit for Improved Engine Performance

The newly updated R55 through R59 Oil Catch Can kit for MINIs equipped with the N16 or N18 engine comes with a "designed-to-fit" stainless steel bracket, mounting hardware, and pre-assembled hoses. Installation is super easy... no drilling and no special tools are needed.

Note: This kit has been redesigned to fit on the firewall directly behind the outlet of the airbox. It uses the factory tab located on the firewall.

Why You Need an Oil Catch Can

"Forum experts and social hysteria" may say an OCC is not needed, but we beg to differ. Many MINI owners suffer from carbon buildup on their intake valve due to oil being recycled through the intake tract to be burned.

With the M7 Oil Catch Can, your MINI Cooper's engine will be protected from excessive oil and hydrocarbon buildup, which leads to performance-hindering oil film and sludge along your intake tract, on your engine control sensors, and on your engine's intake valves.

This oil film & sludge can appear in other critical places throughout the engine, such as the intercooler and the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow), where clean surfaces are critical for maximized heat transfer and engine performance.

Features and Benefits

  • Prevents intake tract oil contamination and intake valve damage
  • Prevents premature sensor failure
  • Keeps engine performance at peak levels
  • Increases flow area by 77% for improved oil separation
  • Includes billet aluminum oil catch can with coalescing oil separation technology and integrated dipstick
  • Comes with two molded oil-resistant silicone hoses with STS technology (available in Red or Black)
  • Includes installation hardware kit and printed instructions
  • 100% carbon fiber housing with CNC machined billet aluminum top and bottom

Easy Installation

With our exclusive "Exact-Fit" pre-assembled hose kit and brackets, installation is super-easy. All hoses, brackets, clamps, necessary fittings, and easy-to-follow detailed step-by-step instructions are included. An oil drain plug and an easy-to-view sight tube are also provided, allowing you to monitor the oil level in the can.

Beware of other "low-cost" catch can systems that use silicone hoses, as oil and silicone are not compatible and silicone hoses will eventually deteriorate, causing a mess in your engine compartment.

The ECS Engineers were able to get more effective results compared to the competition by routing all blow by gasses through the high-load PCV circuit to ensure the catch can is functioning under all engine operating conditions. The ECS Oil Catch Can is CNC machined from billet 6061-T6 aluminum and with a stealthy black anodized finish for lasting durability and appearance, and includes everything needed for an OEM-like fully reversible installation.  Having a kit designed specifically for your E8X 135i or E9X 335i makes for a clean looking setup that any skill level mechanic can install.
