The rear springs on the 2001-2006 E46 M3 models have a chronic broken spring problem. If it hasn't happened to you yet it will. Springs are nothing more than exposed steel and they rust easily. After a while a section of the spring actually breaks off.
A broken spring is very dangerous - the spring is no longer mounted correctly in the suspension and it cannot support the weight of the car, especially when cornering. The ride also suffers as the suspension is no longer able to absorb the bumps and impacts from the road. Aside from a visual inspection of the spring itself you might notice a clunking sound or banging noise coming from the front or rear. An inspection of the noise should also include other related items in the suspension: bushings, ball joints, links, mounts, etc. We also recommend replacing the rubber spring pads on the top and bottom of the spring because they lose their shape over time.
The factory BMW springs sell for $140+ each. We sold and replaced enough while working in New England that we were able to get a strong grasp of the issue and come up with our own springs that are an improvement over the factory springs in every way. These springs are made in Germany using high grade spring steel that is then shot-peened for longer life and powder-coated for protection. These are the same height as the stock replacement BMW springs which makes them a direct replacement.

Tasked with keeping the vehicles rear end firmly mounted while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber subframe bushings were engineered to provide a balance of control while keeping the ride quality soft and supple. As a factory bushings age, they become brittle and begin to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play, or movement in the subframe. The E36/E46 rear trailing arm bushings (RTABs) wear out faster than any other bushing on the car. Worn RTAB will cause excessive toe alignment change and give a 'loose' or 'floaty' feeling in the rear handling. One of the reasons for this is that they over-extend during motion, stretching and twisting the rubber in all directions. These shims sit on either side of the bushing and limit the amount of extension from the bushing. Not only will you get more life from your RTAB but these will help stiffen the bushing during cornering. But during normal driving you will still have all of the comfort of the stock rubber bushings. These part about these bushings is how easy they are to install - simply slide them in place during your bushing install. They can be added to pre-installed bushings too by dropping the trailing arm and removing the cage around the bushing.

There's finally an option to buy housings separate from the bushings, this way you don't have to live with the stress placed on the stock housings when pressing the old bushing out. The biggest benefit come in when there isn't already a pre-pressed in option for poly and spherical upgrades, this leaves the only option of pressing the old bushings out. Through out in-house testing when designing our poly and spherical upgrades we noticed that pressing the bushing out caused stress in some cases creating hairline cracks in the housing leaving it vulnerable to failure.

The front control arm bushings are a key piece of the suspension. They are constantly in motion and take abuse from impacts, potholes, rough roads, and general cornering/wheel motions. To give a quiet and smooth ride, the bushings are made of rubber with a metal sleeve insert. But the rubber can only withstand so much abuse before they become loose and spongy. This results in vibrations and possibly a shimmy when driving. A visual inspection will usually confirm that there is too much flex in the rubber or the rubber has cracked and torn. And if you're installing new control arms, always install new bushings to avoid duplicating labor costs.
