Unfortunately, as these transmissions age, shifter-related issues have become increasingly common. If allowed in the rules these solid aluminum transmission mounts offer many advantages over a urethane or Delrin mounts. It's no wonder that these mounts have found their way into the top BMW racers in the country. These are machined from solid aluminum and have zero deflection, engine torque will cause a rubber or urethane mount to flex or deflect allowing more torque to passed through the drive line (instead of being wasted winding up the mount). This puts the shift linkages in better consistent alignment. And unlike rubber or urethane the aluminum has zero wear and is not affected by leaking oil or other fluids so this is likely the last set of transmission mounts you will ever need. We very strongly recommend using the solid transmission and engine mounts together as a complete kit, mixing a rubber mount with a metal mount will cause undue stress on the mounting points and will lead to a failure. We never advise using a solid mount unless a corresponding solid mount is also used.

These are a no-compromise design for all-out racing use, full solid aluminum mounts should not be used on street-driven cars since there is no material to absorb vibration making these quite harsh for regular street use (track cars don't care about noise).

Red Line thoroughly evaluates the manufacturer's recommendations and only makes a fluid recommendation if their own product meets or exceeds the original specification. In many cases the Red Line synthetic will outperform the factory supplied fluids. We've been using Red Line Oil in our BMWs since we opened in 1994 and it remains our best selling BMW differential fluid. 75/90 is the weight most commonly used in BMW differentials since the 1960s, including the factory clutch-type limited-slip diffs (exceptions being M3/M5/M6 cars since 2001). We use 75W90 in nearly all BMW chassis and the custom differentials that we sell. It's great for the street where the polyol-ester base has natural lubricity and friction modifiers lead to smoother and quieter operation with lower operating temps than the factory fluid. We also use it in some track cars that don't already use the more aggressive 75/90NS fluid (without friction modifiers).

Recommended or exceeds specifications for API GL-5, GL-6, MT-1, MIL-L-2105E, SAE J2360, and Chrysler spec MS-9763. Matches the specifications for the factory BMW SAF-XO diff fluid (#07512293972).

RED LINE MT-90 is designed to provide excellent protection and improved shiftability for manual transmissions and transaxles. MTL and MT-90 have cured the problem of hard shifting in numerous transmissions which have notoriously difficult shifting. The secret to their success is two-fold. First, they have the appropriate coefficient of friction for most manual transmission synchronizers. Many gear oils, engine oils, and ATFs are too slippery for proper synchro engagement. Secondly, the viscosity characteristics of MTL and MT-90 allow proper shifting over the entire temperature range which the transmission will experience. The synthetic base oils used have a very high viscosity index which provides relatively constant viscosity as temperature changes. MTL is a low 75W, almost a 70W, at very low temperatures and a high 80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT-90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL. The shear stability and oxidation stability of these products are excellent, thus the physical characteristics of Red Line MTL and MT-90 will change little with use.

The ZF 320z S5D is a common swap choice among BMW enthusiasts due to its reliable and robust nature. Unfortunately, it does have a weakness. The detent pins and springs that live inside of the transmission are known to wear down over time, often causing the shift lever to lean towards the 5th gear position when in neutral.

This is the OE shifter for the E46 325xi and the 330xi (up to 03/2003) and the E36 Z3 1.9 and 2.5.

The shift lever out of the Z3 1.9 delivers a smooth and quiet shift without the notchiness and effort of aftermarket short shift kits. The Z3 shifter in the E30 is approximately 20% shorter than the original E30 shifter - less reduction than a full short shift kit but the perfect compromise between stock and aftermarket. We have installed multiple shift levers in the E30 but the Z3 1.9 feels the best to us. The shift knob height is reduced by about 1/4". This is the Genuine BMW Z3 1.9 shift lever and a direct fit to 6/86-1992 E30 318i/is, 325e/es, and 325i/is.

E30 install note: there is a bowl-shaped vibration damper mounted with the transmission flex disc (guibo). This damper needs to be removed or you need to bend the stock selector rod so it will clear. Most E30s already have the vibration damper removed so don't be surprised if it's not there. If you do choose to remove it, this would be the perfect time to replace the flex disc. On some 325e models the flex disc is a larger diameter and the selector rod will need to be bent to clear it.

Transmission fluid is responsible for both cooling and lubricating sensitive transmission components. Over time, this fluid becomes contaminated by particulate from clutch and gear components wearing down. This contamination reduces the fluid's ability to act as a lubricant, eventually leading to increased wear and tear within the transmission. To prevent excess wear and keep your transmission in top shape, the fluid and filter should be replaced regularly. As per ZF's recommendations, we suggest performing a full service on your 8HP automatic transmission every 50,000 miles. If your vehicle has been modified to produce more power than stock or if it is regularly track-driven, we recommend shorter 30,000-mile service intervals. This will ensure your transmission's fluid is free from contamination, which will help extend the life of internal transmission components, such as clutch packs and solenoids.
