Failures can come from a number, or combination, of causes: improper maintenance, age and mileage, poor design, environmental factors, poor repair work, and over-stressing modifications. One of the most common issues with the E46 is that the subframe likes to tear away from the chassis. Fix this by welding in a Rear Subframe reinforcement kit.

Back when the minds at BMW set out to design the E36's lower transmission support, they executed perfectly. A cast piece manufactured from lightweight aluminum would surely provide the proper support for the business end of the powertrain.
