New Turner Motorsport F8X Performance Oil Cooler is a direct-fit upgrade for BMW's equipped with the S55 engine. Designed to restore lost efficiency and improve thermal control, it features a 7% thicker bar-and-plate core and a 6.5% increase in finned surface area to better manage oil temperatures under hard street or track use. Built with fully TIG-welded 5052 aluminum end tanks, this all-aluminum cooler eliminates the failure-prone plastic tanks found on factory units, delivering long-term durability through repeated heat cycles. A black painted finish with a laser-etched Turner logo adds a clean, OEM-plus appearance, while retained factory rubber mounts ensure a precise, vibration-isolated installation. Ideal as a replacement or performance upgrade, the Turner Motorsport Oil Cooler offers increased capacity, improved reliability, and peace of mind when pushing your F8X on the road or at the track.

Whether your S55-equipped BMW serves as a daily driver or track car, keeping temperatures cool is critical. While most enthusiasts focus on upgrading the radiator and water-to-air intercooler systems, the engine oil cooler is an overlooked yet critical component.

New for the F8X-generation M2, M3, and M4 is a low-slung, horizontally mounted oil cooler designed to harness underbody aerodynamics. By placing the cooler in a low-pressure zone, this design enhances airflow efficiency and achieves sustainable oil temperatures for stock and street-driven cars. However, the compact core is quickly overwhelmed on modified or track-driven vehicles. Its exposed mounting position also leaves it highly susceptible to impact damage, so a minor scrape or piece of road debris can mean a costly full replacement. If you’re already replacing your oil cooler, it’s the perfect time to upgrade!

Our engineering team set out to solve the shortcomings of the factory design by developing a larger, higher-capacity core that delivers measurable gains in thermal stability. With a 7% increase in core thickness over OEM, this upgraded unit enhances airflow through the cooler and helps maintain lower, more consistent oil temperatures under sustained load. Thanks to its robust bar-and-plate core, precision-formed sheet metal end tanks, and durable 5052 aluminum construction, it’s built to withstand the harsh realities of real-world performance driving.

Replaces OEM part numbers 17212284540 and 17214802333.

BMW’s turbocharged S55 engine uses a water-to-air charge air cooling system, with a front-mounted heat exchanger responsible for heat dissipation. Unfortunately, the factory single-row, 27mm core design is quick to heat soak under high load, leading to excessive intake air temperatures and potential limp mode conditions—especially on modified or track-driven cars.

To solve this issue, we've developed a drop-in upgrade over the factory unit. Engineered for durability and maximum cooling efficiency, this heat exchanger is a must-have for high-horsepower street builds, spirited canyon driving, and extended track sessions. Built from TIG-welded 5052 aluminum, our design eliminates the factory plastic end tanks—one of the system’s most common failure points. Each heat exchanger features CNC-machined billet aluminum hose connections, mounting flanges, and brackets for perfect OE fitment and trouble-free installation.

By replacing the OEM 27mm single-row core with a robust 35mm dual-row design, this heat exchanger dramatically increases both cooling capacity and surface area. Frontal area jumps from 307mm to 475mm, resulting in a 100% increase in coolant volume and significantly improved heat-soak resistance. The outcome? Lower, more stable charge air temperatures that help your S55 deliver consistent, reliable power—on the street or at the track.

Replaces OEM part numbers 17112284608 and 17112459062.

Features:

5052 aluminum construction eliminates plastic end tank failures A performance-oriented, dual-row core provides a 55% increase in frontal surface area, and a 100.29% increase in coolant volume over the OE heat exchanger! OE Heat Exchanger: Single-row core 27mm core thickness 307mm core height ECS High Performance Aluminum Heat Exchanger: Dual-row core 35mm core thickness 475mm core height TIG-welded 5052 aluminum end tanks, polished to a mirror finish for a high-quality look CNC-machined connectors and bracketry ensure seamless fitment with factory cooling hoses, transmission cooler lines, condenser, and radiator Drop-in upgrade - no modifications required for installation! Since the F8x M3/M4 was designed to make impressive power in stock form (and loads more with upgrades) these cars feature some heavy duty cooling hardware. In order to keep oil temperatures down (something many late model M cars have struggled with) requires a large oil cooler. BMW engineers positioned the oil cooler quite low under the car, positioned horizontally - an aerodynamic design which creates a vacuum force while driving, drawing heat from the oil cooler. The issue some of the vehicle owners have experienced is road debris from small branches to chunks of ice have impacted the OE belly pan hard enough to crack the oil cooler draining the cars oil rapidly. Being one of the lowest points of the car, even a close encounter with a parking block can mean the end of the road for the factory belly pan - and oil cooler. Damage to the belly pan means reduced cooling, which can result in dangerously high engine temperatures. Once the belly pan is damaged, there is no longer any protection for the oil cooler, meaning damage to the cooler and a catastrophic loss in oil pressure may be right around the corner.
