During the combustion cycle, each ignition pulse results in a small amount of torsional vibration. As RPMs rise, these vibrations can reach a resonant point, which stresses the crankshaft and can cause metal fatigue, cracks, or even the crankshaft snapping.

Luckily, this is easily managed by your engine's harmonic balancer, which acts as a shock absorber at the front of your crankshaft. The harmonic balancer, also called a crankshaft damper, is made from multiple layers of metal and rubber, which absorb these vibrations to remove the harshness caused during engine operation, protecting your engine and main bearings from damage.

Common symptoms of a failing harmonic balancer include:

• Abnormal Engine Vibrations
• Squealing / Chirping Noises
• Visual Wobble or Separation of the metal and rubber layers
• Cracked and/or hardened rubber
• Serpentine Belt Misalignment

During the replacement of the harmonic balancer, it is also very easy to access the front crankshaft seal. We suggest replacing this seal at the same time to address existing leaks or prevent future leaks. This seal is not known to be a major issue for the B58 engine, unlike other earlier BMW engines, but higher mileage engines tend to leak from this seal. If not replaced in time, this could lead to excessive oil loss and a slipping serpentine belt.
