The Art of Racing in the Rain

This week was an exciting one for everyone at Turner Motorsport. With the debut of The Art of Racing in the Rain in theaters everywhere, this wild experience has reached its peak as audiences that would otherwise be unaware of the Turner team see the yellow and blue car on screen. The surreal feeling that comes with that attention has everyone somewhat elated. Naturally, a group of us went out to celebrate the movie release on Thursday night and it became the perfect short anecdote for Turner Motorsport Weekly.

With the movie released that night, some of the Turner Motorsport team all went for tacos and to see our favorite race car on the big screen. We met at a ‘tacos and rum’ bar to set the mood and enjoyed the trivia night happening by chance that night. Sometimes, its nice to just unwind and have a moment where the only relation to work around are fellow employees. That dinner was perfect, especially considering the choice food favored by our own Will Turner, but preceded some less than perfect inconveniences.

As we all left dinner and headed up the street for the movie, everyone was in high spirits, anxious to see the movie. When we arrived at the theater, however, we were immediately presented with an emotional let down. The theater had experienced a power outage of some kind, and most of their equipment was out of commission for the evening. With no other movie theaters in the area showing the film, we had to make a decision to either rush a half an hour away to make a screening in a neighboring town or to call it for the night and try again a different time.

Since the closest theater with a show time we could feasibly make was quite far from a few of our homes, the group decided to split up. Those of us who lived the farthest decided to spend the next few hours just hanging out with a drink or two, while the ones who lived within reasonable distance of that theater went to see The Art Of Racing in the Rain for a late screening. Unfortunately, for me specifically, I would be the only one not to enjoy my evening.

Leaving the theater parking lot, the driver’s side axle in my E30 decided it didn’t like being intact. Before you ask, no, I wasn’t being irresponsible with my driving. At a solid clip of 5mph in the parking lot, the axle snapped. Unfortunately, that means something somewhere in my cobbled together looks-better-than-it-is project E30 that is bad enough to snap an axle like the fragile ego of a Hollywood actor. With that, my night was over while I waited for a tow truck to shamefully cart my beloved convertible back to my house where I could take it apart.

While I enjoyed the benefits of my AAA membership for the third time in as many months, the rest of the team cried their way through The Art of Racing in the Rain. Without giving up any details and spoilers from the movie, according to those who didn’t break their car on the way to the screening, the film is a tear-jerker that follows the racing and personal life of Milo’s character through the eyes of his dog. The part we care most for, however, is the introductory ten minutes or so that depict the Turner Motorsport M4 thundering around the track and include some of our own race team and our fearless leader Will Turner as part of the pit crew.

So, if you have a spare few hours today, a fine way to spend your Sunday afternoon would be to check out The Art of Racing in the Rain and make sure to be there for the very first scenes to catch Turner Motorsport in an unlikely setting. If you’re like me, however, you will probably be brushing up on
