Turner Motorsport Valved Performance Exhaust

We finally did it. We put our heads together and asked ourselves what we wanted to see for the crowd-favorite E9X 335i N54 and came up with an answer. You may have seen our new Turbo Side Intake System that adds proven performance as well as our aluminum coolant expansion tank, engine mounts, short shift upgrade, lightweight flywheel, and more. Paired with the software of your choice, like COBB and Burger Motorsport’s JB4, these performance mods can drastically improve the power output and add to the engaging nature of your driving experience in your 335i. We were, however, missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: an exhaust system that meets our discerning taste and is suitable for all scenarios. So that’s what we set out to make, and it’s finally here. We are proud to introduce you to our new Turner Motorsport E9X 335i Stainless Steel Valved Cat-Back Exhaust System, which we will cover today in this issue of Turner Motorsport Weekly.

Exhaust is something necessary for every internal combustion vehicle. In our Keys to Performance article covering the subject, we focused on what that all entails. Here, we’re going to specifically introduce you to our take on the N54 cat-back. First and foremost, we had to ask ourselves what we would want to see (and hear) on our vehicles.

Our natural conclusion was that the exhaust had to match the quality of the car, give it the motorsport look Turner is known for, it needed to fit like the factory system, and it had to give the N54 a more menacing sound that doesn’t accentuate the undesirable noise associated with a straight-six engine. With this cat-back, we believe we have done just that.

The biggest challenge was trying to find that happy medium of sound and performance necessary on any car that sees road and track time. Too much in the performance arena can sacrifice daily drivability and ruin the refined experience we would expect from a late model BMW, but too much comfort would make it just a gimmick. That’s why we chose to hit the best of both worlds by developing a free-flowing system with aggressive sound and performance that has a nifty valve setup in the mufflers to give you quiet comfort at the press of a button. Many modern performance cars offer a similar system from the factory, but they are hampered by the need to hit the widest target audience, so the systems are usually less than ideal for peak performance. Our system is designed to give you full volume, low restriction, high-flowing spent gas routes that has the benefit of being able to go into ‘stealth mode,’ so you can think of it as being geared toward the opposite side of milder factory systems.
Speaking of factory systems, we wanted this exhaust to install and fit like the factory unit to both ease installation and use the wonderful BMW expert engineering to ensure it stays put the way the manufacturer intended. Not only that, but the bolt-on nature makes it something you can easily do in your home garage rather than needing a welder or shop to toss it up there. The only additional work would be running the vacuum lines to operate the vacuum-actuated valve cutouts in the mufflers to give you the least restrictive, most noisy, and highest performing route to the tailpipe for your spent gas.

And lastly, it had to look the part and match the quality you, the BMW owners who will want this system, would expect. We went with 304 stainless steel, mandrel-bent, Accuseal slip-fit jointed, 2.5” piping and a matching stainless steel muffler with those tasty valves that let you go from stealth to party mode at the flip of a switch. Using only high-quality materials ensures this exhaust will not only offer the sound and performance you want but the longevity and attractive looks you need to feel happy with the system for as long as you have it. Of course, we kept weight in mind, too, which is why we chose the perfect balance for strength and weight reduction by using 1.25mm thick piping, which gives the rigidity you need while still removing excess weight found in the factory unit.
