5 Reasons Why You Should Convert Your BMW to Wheel Studs

BMWs are equipped with lug-studs from the factory, which mate to their female threads on the hub and hold the wheel in place. They work perfectly for holding the OEM wheels to the hub and are not something a ‘normal’ commuter would think twice about. However, if you have ever had to service your BMW and needed to remove a wheel, then you have probably encountered the stubborn and inconvenient nature of OEM lug-studs. Fortunately, an easy solution exists. Here are five reasons, why you need to convert your BMW to actual studs.

1: When reinstalling a wheel with OEM lug-bolts, the careful trick of balancing your wheel on your shins while trying to prevent the rotor from spinning and mating your wheel up in line with the threads is more than a nuisance. In low-light situations, like the side of the highway after a flat tire, this can be almost impossible since you need both hands to hold the wheel and have no free hand for a light. Stud conversions allow you to easily throw your new wheel on quickly, which means less time on the side of the highway or in the pits.

2: Wheel hangars, like those included in OEM BMW toolkits, are a great option to counter the annoyance of threading in lug-bolts, but these have their drawbacks. Thread-in style or smooth, you still have to make sure the wheel does not drop to one side and spin the rotor, which misaligns the bolt holes. You have to do this four times, one for each wheel, which can take just as long and be just as annoying as if you had just sat down and used your shins to hold the wheel up.

3: Racing leagues predominately require drivers to have stud conversions, as studs are much stronger than lugs and are significantly longer. This means you have a lower chance of shearing a stud over a hard bump or in a collision as well as a lower risk of an improperly tightened bolt backing off the threads all the way. Safety first, kids.

4: Since that the studs are longer, should you choose an aftermarket wheel with an aggressive offset that would otherwise require new lug-bolts, you will be able to still mount them easily with your existing bolts. This means wheel swapping is much easier and doesn’t mean you have to keep dozens of different length lug-bolts in a Tupperware on your workbench.

5: Stud conversions just look cool. The long studs stick out farther than the lugs in most cases and just offer an aggressive look. They are reminiscent of those ‘shredder’ wheels from Ben Hur during the chariot race. Definitely cool in our book.

These five reasons should be enough to convince anyone that studs are probably right for your car. Whatever your need is, using studs is safer, easier, more convenient, and awesome in every way. We offer stud conversions for nearly all European models, so stop banging your shins on your wheels and start making your life easier!
