Differential Mounts and Upgrades

Rubber mounts are used to locate the differential to the subframe in RWD BMWs. This is one area that we like to focus on to improve power transfer, response time, and the overall feel of the drivetrain. By using a stiffer bushing you reduce or eliminate the 'wind up' and deflection of the stock rubber differential mounts when power is applied. A solid bushing will not twist when power (torque) is applied. Instead that power is directed to the drive wheels where it will do the most good. Our diff mount upgrades are solid rubber, Delrin, or aluminum kits depending on the application and the intended use. Even though these were developed for our race cars, we put them in a lot of street cars as well. The diff is not directly linked to the wheel and suspension so these are not as affected by bumps and road imperfections. Some additional drivetrain vibration may be felt through the chassis but in our experience it's very minimal. When installing one of our performance differentials make sure you also replace the mounts! And any subframe overhaul should also include solid diff mounts. There's no downside!

Made in the USA This rear differential mount is made from near-solid Delrin plastic and is a direct replacement upgrade from the stock rubber piece. The Delrin material has almost no flex to it, which results in better response, more feedback, and more power transferred to the wheels. Because the diff on these cars acts as a 'stressed' part of the rear suspension, we only advise using this solid mount with our Turner Solid Aluminum Subframe Mounts. This part is legal in many racing classes.

Stock mounts are made from soft rubber and are sometimes filled with fluid to give a car the most comfortable ride possible. The soft rubber and fluid helps to reduce the total amount of vibration, noise, and harshness (NVH) that is transferred into the cabin. The problem with this is driveline slop. The stock mounts allow a lot of excess movement and increases the amount of time it takes to transfer power to the wheels.

In order to address this issue, performance mounts can be substituted to reduce the amount of slop and transfer power to the wheel quicker. Two options for this are polyurethane mounts and solid mounts.

Solid mounts are great for an immediate transfer of power but allow for a ton of noise and vibration to be felt and heard in the cabin of the vehicle. This is great for the track where there aren't any issues with excess harshness, but as a daily driver, this can become an annoying pain in the neck.

The best middle ground is Polyurethane. Polyurethane is much stiffer than rubber and gives you the much stiffer feel you may be looking for. This allows for the increase in responsiveness, but isn't so extreme that it transfers all of the sound and vibrations into the cabin. This makes it much more comfortable for daily use while still reinforcing your driveline.

These rubber bushings from Meyle are a direct replacement for the stock differential bushings in the E46 3-series, E83 X3 SAV, and Z4 Roadster. If your original bushings are worn (likely around 100,000 miles) these are a great replacement upgrade. The front bushings are the stock OEM type rubber bushings. The rear bushing is a Meyle HD upgrade over stock - about 15% stiffer than the originals. This means the bushing will not flex and twist as much. This puts more power to the wheels since power is no longer used up for 'torquing' the bushing. These are not race bushings; the rubber material is perfectly suitable for street use.

The non-M E46/E83/Z4 models use three differential mounts - two front bushings in the subframe and one rear mount in the diff cover. This set of bushings covers all three. You can opt to include new mounting hardware in the Options list below.

Made in the USA For our Grand-Am Cup E46 M3s we wanted a fully solid differential mount setup. The advantages of a fully-solid aluminum set is that they last forever, quickens response in the suspension, and frees up horsepower to the wheels. These fully solid aluminum diff mounts are CNC machined and lightened for a direct replacement of the original rubber pieces.

By substituting aluminum for rubber we can take out all of the deflection and 'wind up' inherent to the original rubber pieces. The high deflection rate of the stock rubber means the suspension reacts slower as the bushing is compressed. The power used to compress that bushing is instead passed straight to the axles and wheels. And since there is no time lost to deflection, response is greatly improved. These diff mounts are only recommended for racecars since the aluminum transfers more noise and vibration.

This is a 3-piece set with a single front bushing and two rear bushings to press into the cover. They mount with the stock BMW hardware.

Changing out the stock rubber differential bushings for Delrin and aluminum will result in more feedback and better suspension performance. This kit will also help prevent the front diff bolt from loosening or shearing - a very common problem on E36 cars.

The Turner Motorsport solid diff bushings have spent years being tested in various racing series and have even been used extensively on street cars. These bushings are CNC machined from high-grade billet aluminum and Delrin and are a direct replacement for the stock rubber pieces. The rear two differential cover bushings are slotted to allow for BMW manufacturing tolerances. The kit includes 3 pieces: a Delrin front mount and 2 aluminum rear mounts. A new front diff bolt is recommended - add it from the drop-down box below.

This does NOT fit large case Evo M3 differentials.

Since the differential is centrally mounted in the rear subframe, with all suspension mounts interconnected, a differential with too much deflection will affect handling and could even damage the rear subframe.

These 88A urethane E46 M3 diff mounts are much stiffer than stock but still not as solid as our Turner aluminum/Delrin bushings. This set will resist twisting much better than the stock rubber mounts. Included is the front diff mount and two rear mounts in the cover.

When working on the rear subframe, replacement of any rubber bushings and mounts should be performed. This is the front differential mount bushing and it takes the majority of the torquing motion of the diff when under load. The constant twisting will cause this bushing to wear out pretty fast. This is the Original BMW rubber part.

BMW does not sell the differential mounts separate from the cover. And as with all rubber mounts, they will have to be replaced at some point, forcing you to also buy a new diff cover. This is an Original BMW part.
**Note** - a paper gasket is not sold with this cover. BMW no longer uses paper gaskets - they advise the use of a silicone sealant such as RTV black.

Urethane mounts keep the differential from twisting under load. As torque is put through the driveline it causes anything to twist and move. The differential is mounted to the subframe and the twisting and deflection can be transferred to the rest of the chassis. With a stiffer mount the differential will not deflect as much. This improves seat-of-the-pants feeling to the driver, giving more feedback for smoother power delivery. In theory, there's also more torque being sent to the drive wheels since it's not being used up shifting the diff weight around.

These are tough 88A durometer urethane bushings with a anodized almunum center sleeve, engineered by ECS. This is a set of E36 diff bushings - 1 for the front and 2 for the rear cover. New high-grade hardware is included (the front bolt has a tendency to snap from all that torque twisting!).
