BMW Engine Mount Upgrades

Your BMW’s engine mounts provide support for the engine and prevent it from moving too much. How you drive your BMW will determine which engine mounts are right for you. In this article, we will cover each type of engine mount available from Turner Motorsport and which ones will be best for your experience behind the wheel.


OE Ride Quality:

BMW uses rubber motor mounts from the factory which are designed to reduce NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness). Many late model vehicles feature fluid-filled rubber mounts which are able to further reduce the amount of NVH felt in the cabin. These soft OEM mounts provide a quiet and comfortable ride and have a long lifespan. They allow the engine to move and twist, which prevents vibration from the engine reaching the cabin. For a stock car or mildly upgraded one, choosing the OEM Rubber Engine Mounts is the best option. You will retain the original ride quality and regain some power lost to worn or failed old engine mounts by choosing OEM replacements.


Daily Driving Upgrade:

If you have made some mild engine upgrades, or even spicy ones, upgrading your engine mounts to Polyurethane versions will improve your BMW’s power delivery. Polyurethane is a Polymer used for its increased rigidity and durability over solid rubber or fluid-filled rubber mounts. The stiffer Polyurethane reduces engine deflection and does not allow the engine to move as freely as it would on softer rubber mounts. This rigidity means more power goes to the wheels, but they will also add NVH when compared to the factory mounts. For most enthusiasts, this minimal decrease in ride comfort is not a hard sacrifice to make. These are great on the street or for some light track day use.

Track Upgrade: DELRIN®

Our own DELRIN® engine mounts are highly effective at improving throttle response and eliminating deflection. We designed these to specifically meet racing regulations that either penalize or restrict the use of completely solid mounts. These are perfect for anyone looking for a solid feel that is within the specified rules for leagues like the Grand-Am Cup. While they do almost eliminate deflection, these DELRIN®/Aluminum motor mounts are far noisier than the OEM rubber or Polyurethane motor mounts. For this reason, we do not encourage their use in most street driven applications.

Track Upgrade: Solid

Solid motor mounts are exactly as they sound: a solid metal (usually aluminum) mount is used to directly fasten the engine to the frame of your BMW, completely eliminating all engine deflection. We cannot stress this fact enough: solid mounts should not be used in street driven applications and should only be used when all drivetrain mounts are being changed to solid. If you have zero deflection at the engine, but a softer set of mounts on the transmission, you can cause serious damage to your drivetrain. This happens as a result of the solid mounts not allowing the engine to move, which puts undue stress on the mounts farther down the driveline and can cause failures. If your engine, transmission, subframe, and differential mounts are all solid, you will not experience as much risk of driveline damage. This causes extreme increases to NVH and once again, is not something we recommend for vehicles that see any street driving.
