How to Protect your BMW Engine this Season

It’s almost time to bust out your favorite BMW with the upcoming warmer weather. Before you do, however, you need to go through the time-honored tradition of pre-season maintenance. If you are just pulling your BMW from hibernation, chances are it doesn’t need much, but that doesn’t mean you can skimp on the prep work that will help keep your engine from wearing prematurely. With a little help from the well-known lubrication experts at LIQUI MOLY, you can confidently take care of the first major steps to get your BMW ready for regular use this season.

LIQUI MOLY has exploded on the scene here in North America in recent years and has been a major partner with us at Turner Motorsport for good reason. They are the leading experts in lubrication solutions and engine protection thanks to the dedication of their engineers and strict product requirements. With even tighter requirements than BMW, its no wonder they have quickly become the go-to preferred oil among enthusiasts. But they produce more than just better than OEM-compliant engine oil. LIQUI MOLY is just as famous for their long list of additives and protective products as well as their molecular friction reduction agents in their iconic Molygen oil.

Personally, I use Molygen in both my E30 and my daily driver to help protect both engines as they age. However, this is really the ‘quick’ solution and is not the best option for everyone. As we take our cars out of hibernation, a true engine flush and a few additives from LIQUI MOLY is the best bet in terms of starting on the right foot for this season.

Naturally, you will want to change your oil before you take your BMW out for the first drive. Even if you changed it shortly before you put the car away, we suggest fresh oil to start the season. Before you replace the oil, though, LIQUI MOLY has a special additive to help ensure your engine is as clean as possible and your new oil performs its critical function of lubricating all the moving parts as efficiently as possible. Their Pro-Line Engine Flush is a trusted concoction that does just that.

With the old oil still in the car, get your BMW up to operating temperature at idle. Add the recommended amount of Pro-Line Engine Flush at operating temp, and let it idle for 10 minutes. During this time, the engine flush will break down any sludge or contaminates into the oil, effectively cleaning every surface inside the engine. When the ten minutes are up, simply turn the car off and drain your old oil as usual. With the old oil, all the grime and buildup you would otherwise need to clean in a parts washer will flush from the system and into your drain pan. Think of it as a fresh start before you add your new oil.
LIQUI MOLY PRO-LINE ENGINE FLUSH + CERATEC
After the engine flush, add the manufacturer-specified amount of oil combined with CeraTec ceramic protection. CeraTec is the other piece to this puzzle that will help protect your BMW engine over time by reducing friction. CeraTec works by coating all the uneven surfaces with a ceramic film, which ultimately ‘smooths out’ all the peaks and valleys that you could observe on any metal surface under a microscope. This increases the efficiency of your engine and decreases wear. CeraTec is critical as your BMW ages, but definitely not something exclusive to high-mileage engines. With 50,000 miles of protection, CeraTec works best the earlier it is included in the operating life of your engine for the longest and healthiest service life of your BMW. It’s like extra protection for your investment and reduced risk even under extreme conditions, like that on the race track.

With the flushed and cleaned engine, new LIQUI MOLY oil, CeraTec anti-friction treatment, and a fresh Hengst filter, your BMW is ready for the season. That isn’t everything, though. LIQUI MOLY, after extensive testing, has found the best way to protect your engine for the longest service life possible is to alternate between CeraTec and MoS2 with your oil changes. Once you have completed the engine flush and oil change with CeraTec, your next step is to drive your BMW until your next oil service interval. This time, add MoS2 anti-friction treatment instead of CeraTec. MoS2 is similar to CeraTec in function, but it does not create a lasting coat like the ceramic protection of CeraTec. While CeraTec will remain on the surfaces inside your engine for roughly 50k miles, even after an oil change, MoS2 will not.

By adding MoS2 to every other oil change, you are effectively creating the lowest friction environment possible inside your engine. This results in the longest service life, healthiest operation, greatest efficiency, and most power your engine can produce. Naturally, this is the effect every BMW owner wants. Our BMWs are investments. We want to protect them so we can enjoy them for as long as possible. With a few preventative measures thanks to the experts at LIQUI MOLY, you can do just that. So, before you take your BMW out for its first drive of the season, make sure your engine is as clean and healthy as possible with LIQUI MOLY Pro-Line Engine Flush, CeraTec anti-friction solution, and Leichtlauf oil. It’s what the professionals do, at least.
