(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
Turner Motorsport Heads Full Throttle to Detroit After Successful Weekend at VIR
June 10, 2021 --- Amesbury, Mass. ---
If it has been tough to reach Will Turner lately, you’ll have to give him some space. He’s a bit busy at the moment with his eponymous Turner Motorsport team just finishing up double-podium result at the June 5 - 6 2021 GT World Challenge America Championship Sports Car Shootout at VIRginia International Raceway and preparing to defend the team’s lead in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona class points standings on June 12th Chevrolet Sports Car Classic race.
Racing the BMW M6 GT3 in North America’s top sprint and endurance GT championships, Turner Motorsport is ensuring a winning legacy for BMW’s M6 GT3 racing machine – now in its last season of competition.
Will Turner – “Detroit will make it four consecutive sprint races for us and the first three have resulted three podium finishes, including the victory at Mid-Ohio. Based on our speed at Belle Isle in 2019 and our M6 programs improvements, I see no reason that we won’t be on the podium this weekend. Yes, it’s a busy time for us, but it has also been a pretty good summer so far.”
VIR
Michael Dinan and Robby Foley raced the No. 96 Turner Motorsport Liqui-Moly/ Richard Mile BMW M6 GT3 to a second-place finish overall and in the Pro class in the opening round of the weekend to record their best finish of the GT World Challenge America Championship season. In the second round, a miscue on lap 39 stopped the M6 on track for a few seconds, ultimately dropping the BMW to sixth overall and third place in the Pro class at the checkered flag.
Robby Foley – “What a great weekend at VIR with a double podium! We are beginning to hit a stride as a team and I’m really proud of Michael’s progression, he’s doing a great job. It was amazing to have fans back this weekend. Hopefully, this is the trend, and we’ll see more and more each weekend!”
Michael Dinan – “It was a solid weekend and the team and car both performed great in high heat conditions. I really enjoyed having the fans back at the track, thanks to everyone that came out to watch! I’d also like to thank our amazing sponsors, Liqui Moly and Richard Mille.”
The series returns to action on August 27 – 29 at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
Detroit
With Bill Auberlen and Robby Foley sharing Auberlen’s record 63rd IMSA victory at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on May 16th, the Turner Motorsport co-drivers have raced the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3 to the top of the GT Daytona Driver and Team points standings.
Bill Auberlen – “We had a few issues and some bad luck at both Daytona and Sebring to start the season, but at Mid-Ohio we were able to show what the BMW M6 and the team can do. In 2019, at Detroit we also had a very quick M6. Robby put the car on the pole only to have his time disqualified for a tiny camber infraction. I was running fourth until a gearbox issue dropped us back to 10th two minutes before the checkered flag. That race was only Robby’s 10th in the M6, and we’ve had quite a few victories together since then.”
Robby Foley – “I’m really looking forward to heading back to Detroit after a year off there due to Covid. Historically, our Turner BMW M6 has been strong there, so we’ll try to repeat our pole winning speed from 2019. As always at a street course the walls are close, so we have to keep it clean, but also attack to keep it up front.”
This Saturday’s 100-minute race on the 2.3-mile, 14-turn temporary street course located on Belle Isle is the second round of IMSA WeatherTech Sprint Cup points for the eight non-endurance races on this season’s IMSA calendar. Turner leads Sprint Cup points following the Mid-Ohio win. Practice and qualifying will take place Friday, June 11, with the 100-minute race starting at 5:10 p.m. ET Saturday, June 12, airing live on NBCSN and IMSA Radio (Sirius 219, XM 202, SiriusXM Online 992)
