Turner Motorsport Brings GT Daytona Points Lead to Long Beach.
Sept. 23, 2021 – Newton, NH ---
The 100-minute IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) race at Long Beach, Calif. is usually held towards the start of the season, but the Covid pandemic has jumbled the schedule and this year’s event occurs with only three races remaining. That puts the race directly in the path of the GT Daytona class points battle that sees the Turner Motorsport Liqui-Moly BMW M6 GT3 holding a 27-point lead after nine races to-date.
Because the race is held on a concrete wall-lined, temporary course, seemingly wedged along the city’s waterfront, and is the shortest of the season, it can be overlooked as inconsequential. The race is anything, but. It can easily be a one hour and forty-minute season wrecker.
The GT Daytona class returns to Long Beach for the first time since the 2017 season meaning many of the drivers have not raced there, including Robby Foley. Redondo Beach-born Bill Auberlen can still consider Long Beach to be his home race and has chalked up two GT class wins there (2013 and 2015).
Will Turner – “The points lead is the sharp end of the spear. There is not much room and it’s very easy to fall off. Bill has two GT class wins here to his credit in previous years (2013 and 2015) and Robby is an excellent student. We’ll count on Bill’s experience to get us off to a fast start.”
The race takes the green flag at 2:05 p.m. local time and will be broadcast on NBCSN beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 25.
