Fourth Place GTD Finish For Turner Motorsport at 12 Hours of Sebring
March 20, 2022 – Newton, NH
Almost everything went according to plan for Turner Motorsport at the 70th annual Twelve Hours of Sebring. From Robby Foley qualifying the No. 96 LIQUI-MOLY BMW M4 GT3 on the outside of the GTD class front row, to an early grab of the lead, to Michael Dinan racing strong at the sharp end of the field in his very first Sebring 12 hours, to Bill Auberlen (racing in his record 500th race for BMW) holding down a podium-finishing position in the closing stages of the race, to . . .a fourth place finish due to an unplanned pit stop and driver change to prevent Auberlen from exceeding drive time limits.
Disappointing? A little. Certainly not on the level that the Rolex 24 At Daytona disappointment in January when the team was forced to retire from the race, but Sebring showed the “new car smell” was gone and Turner Motorsport is back and ready to challenge all comers.
Will Turner – “Fourth is not a win, but it feels pretty close to a win today. To be successful in only our second race with the new BMW M4 GT3 is a testament to everyone on the team. We shook off Daytona and came to Sebring ready to win.”
Michael Dinan – “My goal was to be quick, consistent, stay out of trouble, and keep the car in a winning position. I got those jobs done, but yes there is a bit of disappointment. We were better than fourth today.”
Robby Foley – “Overall, we had a very good day. After six seasons with the BMW M6 GT3 we knew where we were at every track. We are learning more about the BMW M4 GT3 with every lap and I believe we showed today that we are gaining momentum.”
Bill Auberlen – “We may not have had the pace at the end for the win, but we certainly had the pace for second. We dodged a bullet with the driving time, but the team reacted quickly, and I got out of the car with 18 seconds to spare. Good momentum and good points. We can be pleased.”
The March 17th two-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race saw the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 of Bill Auberlen and Dillon Machavern finish ninth. The No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT4, co-driven by Vin Barletta and Robby Foley, finished 26th.
Up next is the 100-minute street race on April 10 during the Long Beach Grand Prix weekend.
