(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
Turner Motorsport Heads West For Long Beach Sprint Race.
April 4, 2022 – Newton, NH
After a combined 36 hours of endurance racing at Daytona and Sebring to start the 2022 IMSA season, the Turner Motorsport No. 96 LIQUI-MOLY BMW M4 GT3 now faces a 100-minute sprint race on the temporary circuit on the streets of Long Beach, California.
The shortest race of the season is Bill Auberlen’s home race, having been born just up the coast in Redondo Beach. The BMW ace has twice stood on the top of the GTLM class podium (2013 and 2015) and will be inducted onto the Long Beach Motorsport Walk of Fame on the Thursday before the race weekend. Last year, Auberlen and co-driver Robby Foley brought a 27-point GT Daytona class points lead to a later-in-the-season-due-to-Covid Long Beach event only to end up with the BMW M6 GT3 in the wall, out of the lead, and licking their wounds.
The team is hoping for better luck this season with the promising new BMW M4 GT3 in its very first sprint race. Most recently, after teething problems at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the team qualified second and finished fourth at the 12 Hours of Sebring – just missing the podium after a strong performance.
Practice and qualifying will be held on Friday, April 8th. The 100 minute street race will take the green flag at 2:05 p.m. PT Saturday, April 9th. Coverage on USA Network will begin at 5:00 p.m. ET. IMSA Radio also provides a flag-to-flag broadcast.
Will Turner – “We are excited to begin the sprint racing part of the season. The BMW M4 GT3 is beginning to show its promise. At Sebring, Bill and Robby (and Michael Dinan) showed just how strong the car can be. We can’t have any worse luck at Long Beach than we did last year so everything looks to be in our favor.”
Bill Auberlen – “Long Beach is always something of a homecoming for me. The event is always special, and this year being inducted into the Motorsports Walk of Fame makes it even more so.”
