Turner Motorsport and Watkins Glen have had a very good relationship and the team looks to continue to “Love New York” this weekend at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen weekend.
The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen weekend marks the mid-point of the 2022 IMSA season so before we get started, let’s see where we’ve been so far with the GT Daytona class No. 96 LIQUI-MOLY BMW M4 GT3 - Rolex 24 – dnf, Sebring – 4th; Long Beach – 4th; Laguna Seca – 3rd; Mid-Ohio – 1st; Detroit – 8th. Bill Auberlen and Robby Foley (with Michael Dinan at the endurance races) stand third in GT Daytona driver points.
Let’s review. All-in-all, the team has enjoyed a reasonable start to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Two podium finishes, including the Mid-Ohio win and third in driver points. Last year, Turner secured their third Six Hour win putting them at the top of GT teams list that have won the prestigious endurance race. The count is 2014, 2018, and 2021. The 2021 win was scored by Bill Auberlen, Robby Foley, and Aiden Read. That victory was a record fourth for Auberlen and the first for Foley and Read at the classic event.
“Last year, it was a little Don Salama strategy magic that secured the win for us with the M6 GT3” said Will Turner. “This year, Michael will be making his first six-hour start with Bill and Robby. MD has been a great asset to the team this year and there is no reason he should not be on the top of the podium at the end of the weekend. On the Michelin Pilot Challenge side of things the season has not been as strong as last year or as strong as the season started at Daytona, but it’s coming back around.”
After a strong start at Daytona with Auberlen and Dillon Machavern finishing third and Foley and Vin Barletta (with Dinan) scoring fifth, both cars suffered one bad race, but balanced that with two solid top-10’s. Heading to The Glen, Foley and Barletta stand sixth in GS class driver points. Auberlen and Machavern stand 12th.
The Michelin Pilot Challenge Tioga Downs 120 starts at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 25th. The two-hour race will be streamed live on Peacock. The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen takes the green flag at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, June 26th. The entire race will be streamed live on Peacock. A three-hour condensed program will be broadcast on USA Network from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. IMSA Radio also provides a flag-to-flag broadcast.
