Daytona Never Disappoints – Or Does It? Tough Rolex 24 Weekend Tests Turner Team.

Will Turner, “First things first, I want to talk about the Turner Motorsport team. We have expanded the size of the team this year and now have what I believe is a perfect mix of experienced veterans and enthusiastic newcomers. After all these years, I can look back on the generations of folks that have worked, raced, and won with us. Unfortunately, this Rolex 24 weekend was not a winning one, but it was not for a lack of trying. Everyone on the team, new and old, gave everything they had, but this was not our weekend. BMW has promised to review the issues we had with our cars and I know they will be addressed before Sebring”

The entire Rolex 24 weekend was a difficult one, beginning with Friday’s four-hour BMW M Endurance Challenge, as the new BMW M4 GT4 (G82) racing cars exhibited the teething problems expected in an all-new machine. New to Turner this season, Cameron Lawrence and Rob Megennis started the No. 95 car from the 11th position, but ultimately fell 14 laps to the leaders at the checkered flag to finish 26th. The No. 96 BMW had a better day with drivers Vin Barletta and Robby Foley (with an assist from Jens Klingmann) finishing on the lead lap in 18th, after starting 26th.

Recent racing headlines have been filled with the three dirtiest letters in sportscars racing, this weekend was no exception. Sadly, due to circumstances beyond our control, IMSA’s curious BoP had all of the BMW’s (And 6 other Manufacturers) significantly pegged back and lacking outright pace.  Racing in the GTD PRO class, the No. 95 BMW M4 GT3, driven by Bill Auberlen, Chandler Hull, John Edwards, and Bruno Spengler, had a tough debut. The McIntosh-liveried car looked great and sounded great, but ultimately a steering rack failure on lap 635 ended the day. The car was credited with a 9th place finish in class. The No. 96 LiquiMoly BMW M4 GT3, driven by Michael Dinan, Robby Foley, Patrick Gallagher, and Jens Klingmann, completed 695 laps and took the checkered flag 17th in the GTD class.

The Twelve Hours of Sebring is up next on March 18th.
