The first half of last weekend’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Detroit street race had all the beginnings of a Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 highlight reel. Cameron Lawrence hosted a master class on the new-for-2023 1.645-mile, 9-turn temporary circuit along Motown’s riverfront to lead the 22-car Grand Sport field in every one of his first-stint laps from the pole to his pit stop in the No. 95 machine Unfortunately, following the only pit stop of the race, co-driver Robert Megennis did not complete his first lap, but it was the way he did not complete the lap that kept Turner Motorsport on the highlight reel. Entering turn three on his first lap out of the pits Megennis clipped a competitor’s Aston Martin and vaulted over the car and onto the tire barrier in spectacular fashion. On the tire wall for only seconds, Megennis deftly shifted into first gear and drove back to the pits and out of the race. (Thankfully , no one was injured) The No. 96 M4 GT4 of Vin Barletta and Robby Foley finished the race in ninth, only some 29 seconds behind the winning Mercedes. The duo dropped from second to third in Grand Sport (GS) class driver points standings.
This weekend, June 17 – 18, Barletta and Foley will be racing at VIRginia International Raceway, in Alton, Virginia, both Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2023 SRO GT World Challenge America Championship . The duo will be making their first SRO start this season in the Pro-Am class in the No. 96 BMW M4 GT3. Barletta will also be seeing double-duty at VIR driving the No. 96 United Construction & Forestry BMW M4 GT3 in both of the 40-minute GT America sprint races.
