Turner Motorsport Gets The Short End of the Taco at Road America

Newton, NH --- Aug. 7, 2023

Turner Motorsport scored two top-10 finishes in the Michelin Pilot 120 and a sixth in the IMSA SportsCar Weekend race at Road America, but as reasonable as that is the weekend’s story was really what should have been.

Will Turner said, “We were looking at a season’s third 1-2 Michelin Pilot Challenge finish, but it turned into a fuel mileage race and recent changes to the rules had reduced our fuel tank’s capacity. Obviously, we got the short end of the taco and a 1-2 became a 4th – 8th. The team and drivers did everything we could in both of this weekend’s races, but we came up short – like the small end of the taco short.”

WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – BMW M4 GT3

The No. 97 McIntosh BMW M4 GT3, of Bill Auberlen and Chandler Hull, finished sixth in the two-hour-and-forty-minute IMSA SportsCar Weekend race at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The duo completed 72 laps of the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit to finish on the lead lap. Hull took the green flag to begin the race and Auberlen took the checkered flag. The No. 96 LIQUI-MOLY BMW M4 GT3, of Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher, finished in 12th-place, one lap down to their Turner teammates, after running out of fuel half way through the final lap.

Michelin Pilot Challenge – BMW M4 GT4

Robert Megennis started the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 from the Grand Sport class pole position and with 9 minutes remaining in the two-hour Road America 120 it looked like Cameron Lawrence was going to bring it home at the front of the GS field. With seven minutes to go it was a different story as both Turner Motorsport BMWs had to pit for a splash of fuel. That’s right Robby Foley, in the No. 96 BMW, had been right behind Lawrence and a third Turner BMW 1-2 finish was in sight. Unfortunately, the checkered flag saw Foley finish P4 and Lawrence finish P7 as a number of competitors could go more laps than the BMWs on a tank of fuel. The good news is the he solid finish of Foley and Barletta place them solidly 2nd in Championship points.

Up next is the August 25 – 27th Michelin GT Challenge at VIR, at VIRginia International Raceway, in Alton, Virginia, where Turner will see its VP Challenge, Michelin Pilot Challenge, and WeatherTech SportsCar Championship BMWs in action.
