The N54 in your BMW is an interference engine, meaning that if the timing chain were to fail your engine would suffer catastrophic damage due to valvetrain components colliding with each other. Over time the timing chain will start to wear and stretch, potentially causing it to skip timing or just completely fail. Also, the timing tensioners themselves could fail! Early symptoms of timing chain wear include front end noise not associated with VANOS, or slapping noises coming from the timing cover. Turner Motorsport has assembled a complete kit that includes everything necessary, as well as small hardware, to completely service the timing on your N54. Tools needed to do the job can be found on our site as well. This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 328's cooling system. We start with the basic water pump and thermostat bundle. These are already vital to the health and durability of the N52 328i. But to properly maintain these cars for the long term, the rest of the cooling system must be refreshed and preventatively replaced. Here you can add a radiator, expansion tank, cooling hoses, and the BMW antifreeze. This package fits 328i/328xi with N52 engine and manual transmission.
The sophisticated electronics of the ECU and water pump means catastrophic overheating should be a thing of the past. But the downside is that the electronics can shut down without any warning or symptoms. And troubleshooting is equally frustrating since the water pump electronics are not readable or serviceable. There are several clues to a faulty thermostat or water pump - the fan runs at full speed all the time (even immediately on a cold start), pending (soft) fault code for low coolant flow, or the water pump can be heard running constantly. But when the pump fails it's an immediate shut down of the engine which can be a major inconvenience and lead to additional repairs that might have been avoided with preventative maintance. We recommend a full cooling system overhaul on the E90/E92 every 80-90,000 miles and to check for soft/pending codes at every 5,000 mile service .
Base Cooling Overhaul Package - Water Pump and Thermostat

Includes: + Genuine BMW electric water pump, p/n 11517586925 + mounting screws for water pump (set of 3), p/n 11510392553 + OEM Behr thermostat, p/n 11537549476 + Original BMW connecting hose from thermostat to water pump, p/n 11537521049 + OEM-style hose clamps for hose (x 2)
The water pump on the N52 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. That means the system can actually stop the pump when it doesn't need to be running. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. The preventative replacement is your only insurance from a very inconvenient and costly breakdown in the future. Plus you get the very latest BMW water pump design with any improvements they've made since your original pump was installed.
Cooling Hoses
With regular driving the hoses should last a very long time. Even the plastic connectors seem to be holding up well. But as a preventative measure new hoses are recommended. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 328 water hoses during this job (see diagram):
11537545890, thermostat to cylinder head (includes new o-ring) (D) There are other hoses too but they are not often replaced during a radiator swap (radiator vent hose and heater core hose) and they don't see much wear. We offer these as well if you want a complete set (see Additional Items at the bottom of the page).
Expansion Tank Options
The expansion tank on the 328 is not prone to failures (unlike previous 3-series cars) so a new one is not strictly required. There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.

The Turner Motorsport High-Capacity Aluminum DCT Transmission Pan for BMW F8X and E9X GS7D36SG applications increases fluid capacity to 7.5L for superior thermal management. Engineered to replace fragile OEM plastic, the cast-aluminum pan features heat-dissipating cooling fins, integrated debris magnets, and a Viton gasket to eliminate leaks. Includes mounting screws and a threaded drain plug for direct bolt-on installation. Add the Turner Motorsport High-Capacity Aluminum DCT Transmission Pan to your cart to upgrade your drivetrain cooling.
We've designed a permanent, high-performance replacement for the flawed OEM pan: a cast-aluminum, increased-capacity upgrade that enhances cooling and durability. Its all-aluminum construction provides a significant upgrade over the OE plastic pan, which is prone to cracking when impacted by road debris. Engineered for those who demand more from their vehicle, our design increases fluid capacity to promote superior cooling and help maintain optimal transmission temperatures, even in the most demanding conditions.
To ensure a leak-free seal, we engineered a heavy-duty Viton gasket specific to their transmission pan design. The Viton material provides exceptional reliability under high temperatures and resists deformation—a common failure point of the factory rubber gasket. For further protection, integrated magnets actively attract and hold metal debris that could otherwise compromise the transmission's longevity. This innovative design keeps your fluid clean and extends the overall life of your drivetrain.
Whether your DCT-equipped BMW serves as a track car or a highway cruiser, this pan ensures your transmission remains cool and efficient, minimizing the risk of overheating and wear.

Knock down the roadblocks preventing you from performing regular maintenance on your BMW. On the E9x and E8x chassis you run into issues with changing the rear spark plugs and coil packs. A job that should take approximately an hour or so ends up taking significantly longer because you have to remove the cowl and all associated screws. Most of the time the screws end up missing or dropped into your engine bay which can be a headache and you have to order new hardware or deal with the cowl being incorrectly fastened.
Cowl delete filters are a great addition to your E9x or E8x chassis; these filters allow you to get rid of clutter in the engine bay which adds benefits like weight reduction, improved air flow in the engine bay, more room for working on the engine and an overall cleaner engine bay appearance. We all know it is important to keep up on engine maintenance to keep your BMW running at peak performance and prevent larger future issues. When we can eliminate any roadblocks or additional work preventing us for performing engine maintenance this could make it less daunting to go change spark plugs, coil packs or simple filters.

High flow filter replacement to get your engine breathing better than new!
Replace your dirty, restrictive, factory air filter with the ECS Tuning Exact-Fit High Flow Dry Air Filter!
Proper air intake flow will help your engine breathe better, improving power through the power band and improving fuel economy.
Higher flow than stock paper filters, this reusable filter will show an increase in performance immediately. An easy performance modification that is a direct replacement for your OEM filter.
Oiled versus Dry Filters:
Although both options will keep the air to your engine clean and improve airflow, there are a few differences to consider when choosing the best filter for you. Oiled filters do allow slightly better airflow than dry filters, however they require more maintenance. Oiled filters will likely get dirty faster, needing to be cleaned more regularly. When cleaning an oiled filter, it is necessary to oil them with filter oil afterwards. This filter will save you money by no longer needing to replace a paper filter.
Dry filters offer slightly lower airflow but are easier to maintain while still out performing the OE paper filter. Dry filters can be washed with warm soapy water. There is no oiling necessary afterwards.
Both dry and oiled filters flow better than stock and can be reused.
Key Features:
Direct replacement for the OEM filter
Higher flow than OEM
Dry air filter
Reusable
Only needs cleaning every 50,000 miles under normal highway driving conditions
