PIRELLI WORLD CHALLENGE ROAR BY THE SHORE OF LONG BEACH CUT SHORT FOR TURNER BMWs.
Long Beach, California. April, 20th 2015 Perfect weather and enormous crowds brought BMW fans from up and down the West Coast to the Pirelli World Challenge Roar by the Shore on the streets of Long Beach, California this past weekend.
The world-class Long Beach event attracts race teams, auto manufacturers and automotive industry leaders alike and has been one of the premier North American events on any racing schedule for more than forty years.
As crowds filed into the Long Beach Convention center on Saturday morning the Turner BMW Z4 GT3s went to work on the 11-turn 1.9 mile temporary street course for the thirty minute qualifying session. Bret Curtis quickly found a rhythm in his No. 32 BMW, clinching the eighth spot for Sundays fifty-minute sprint.
Curtis teammate Bill Ziegler qualified the No. 95 Swisher Racing BMW into P14 for Sundays race.
In Sundays fifty-minute race both Turner BMWs took the green flag for what would be a heart-breaking race for both the No. 32 of Curtis and No. 95 of Ziegler.
As the green flag dropped Bret Curtiss No. 32 BMW suffered a drive train malfunction ending his race just seconds after the start.
After such a strong qualifying result, it was extremely disappointing for me and the entire team to have a mechanical malfunction on the start. We had a very strong BMW and I think we would have had a great result with all the teams hard work, said Bret Curtis. Im looking forward to Barber next weekend for rounds six and seven.
Just three laps following the unfortunate start for Curtis, the No. 95 of Bill Ziegler suffered heavy contact with the Acura of Cunningham forcing Ziegler to the garages.
A multitude of incidents and yellow flags overwhelmed the fifty-minute race cutting the weekend short for several competitors.
The first couple laps were extremely hectic and we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, commented Bill Ziegler. All the yellow flags were a real testament to how things were going out there, Im really looking forward to next weekend at Barber.
The Pirelli World Challenge heads to Birmingham, Alabama for rounds six and seven of 2015 season. With just 3 days between events, the turnaround for damaged cars will present a challenge for many teams.
