The Ultimate Spring Maintenance Guide

With February over and spring right around the corner, enthusiasts everywhere are preparing their BMWs for track or show season. As we get all our ducks in a row, we wanted to share with you all some of our recommendations to help you quickly and easily knock out most of the services your BMW most likely needs after its winter hibernation. If you’re like us, these next few weeks will be mad dashes to take care of everything we can so we don’t miss out on any events or that sweet, sweet driving weather. So we’re going to make it easy and help get you started on your spring prep.
Maintenance
First and foremost, the basic fluids. We have handy Packaged By Turner Motorsport kits that will be one-click options to handle most of these services and save you time that could be better spent driving.
Oil Change
Brake Fluid Flush
Transmission Fluid Service
Differential Fluid Service
Specialty Service Tools
These are pretty fundamental parts of any spring prep. Even if you didn’t store your car this winter, knocking out these fluid flushes and changes at once is a good way to start the season on the right foot. We suggest using our Power Bleeder, Brake Fluid Bleeder, and Pressure Bleeder for the easiest time with each of the services. Note that we listed both trans and diff services as optional. If you have completed those in the last 30K miles, and don’t notice any issues, you can leave those alone to save some time.

It is pretty critical that you flush your brakes. Remember, as we discussed in our Keys to Performance: Brakes article, good old brake fluid is hydrophilic, meaning it likes to turn into water over time. You are supposed to flush your brakes every two years, but most racing bodies require you do so before the season.

The hardware itself comes next, which can also be found in several kits that cover entire services with our new Packaged By Turner full-service kits.

Spark Plugs
Drive/Serpentine Belts
Brake Pads/Wear Sensors
Bushing/Ball Joints/ End Links

As far as physical parts go, we want to tackle as much as we can with as little effort as possible. While you’re taking care of that coolant flush, go ahead and replace any parts of your cooling system that have become old or brittle. Expansion tanks, hoses, and the thermostat should all be checked. You can boil a pot of water and drop your thermostat in to see if it opens properly should you not be sure whether it needs replacing.

Lastly, you’ll probably want to replace your windshield wipers and give your BMW a much-needed bath. With a fresh coat of wax shining in the spring Sun, and all your maintenance concerns for the year handled, you can enjoy your BMW all season on or off the track. Be sure to take pictures and send them into Turner Motorsport so we can share them and include a spring prep gallery in later issues of Turner Motorsport Weekly!
