BMW Engine Performance Packages

Since 1993 Turner Motorsport has been at the forefront of performance tuning for BMWs. We show this best in our tuned Performance Packages, developed along stages for specific BMW models. Each staged Package is tuned in-house, bringing together expertise from our street tuning division, service shop, and race team. Nearly all of our Packages feature custom-tuned performance software from the best names in the business. The software is the best feature in our kits, maximizing power gains while doing nothing to affect engine reliability or driveability. In most cases, Stages are upgradeable - you can jump from one stage to another by purchasing the new parts and revised software (contact us directly about buying parts outside of the Stage). Or jump right into a higher stage by purchasing the complete kit. We'll work with you to select the appropriate parts and a matching software tune. Nearly all of our Packages have been tested and tuned on our in-house Dynapack Chassis Dyno. Our packages are designed for US-spec models only.

All vehicles will lose some degree of performance due to heat soak under the right operating conditions. Engine management systems constantly monitor operating conditions and modifying parameters based on sensor inputs. BMW integrated the intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing on models such as the E39 M5, and, being sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover, this is less than ideal for performance applications. Absorbing excess heat from its surroundings, the MAF canaEURtmt shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads an inaccurately high intake air temperature. Compensating for this false hot air measurement, the ECU pulls timing and runs a richer fuel mixture, resulting in a significant loss of torque.

What can you do? Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can properly measure incoming air temps and where it's less prone to heat soak. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly. The result is youaEURtmll experience reduced torque loss and more consistent power output when youaEURtmre pushing your engine hard.

The Turner engineering team was initially skeptical of the claimed performance benefits of this modification. They first set out validate the functionality and performance benefit of a temp sensor relocation. Replicating stop-and-go traffic heat soak in a 2001 540i was a simple task in a controlled environment - their dynometer. First the car was heat soaked to simulate being stuck in traffic or moving at low speeds by running the car four times on the dyno with the dyno's cooling fans disabled. The fans were then turned on for three more runs to observe the recovery rate once air flow was reintroduced. The test: following this procedure once with a stock IAT, and once with their relocation kit in place.

The result? Turner recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm through use of their relocation kit, with even greater recovery to be found for M5 owners. Here are the heat soak-related torque losses Turner experienced:

Stock IAT location:
18rwtq at 2500rpm
10rwtq at 3000rpm
9rwtq at 3700rpm

Turner IAT Relocation:
7rwtq at 2500rpm
5rwtq at 3000rpm
5rwtq at 3700rpm

The Turner engineering team designed a complete plug and play kit (unlike all other options on the market) that makes for quick, easy, and reversible installation. Weather-sealed connectors keep out the elements, while sheathed wiring offers a clean appearance underhood. With a harness nearly 3 feet long - the Turner IAT relocation kit offers flexibility in positioning, but not too long that you're left with unsightly excess wiring. Turner recommends positioning the sensor in a location away from engine heat, but still within the intake ducting to achieve accurate intake temp readings - such as the far side of the base of the airbox. Vehicles with cold air intakes with cone-style filters can even position the sensor in the end of the filter. Simply drill a hole in your (cool) location of choice and plug in the harness. More information including installation instructions and some good examples of sensor mounting locations can be found in our DIY PDF.

We include everything you need to relocate your IAT, just select your desired sensor brand below - Genuine BMW or original equipment Beru.

Also the perfect plug-n-play option for anyone looking to upgrade their intake to utilize an Alpha-N tune!

Note for vehicles with M62 engine: applicable to 1999 and up

What can you do to get rid of this heat soak? Turner designed an IAT relocation kit that moves the intake air temp sensor to a cooler location.

1998-99 E36 323ic/is Stage 1 Performance Package
Peak Power Gain: +20hp / +20ft-lbs
Rev limit: 7000
Octane: 91 or higher

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and performance software. The aFe Cold Air Intake is made with heat-blocking materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe uses an oiled cottonair filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

The software is also Conforti-tuned and supplied with the Shark Injector software loader. The Shark Injector is a do-it-yourself reflash tool that plugs into the diagnostic plug in the engine bay. With the push of a button, it will copy your stock software and reflash your computer with the performance tune. You can set it back to stock at any time by following the same procedure.

Both of these items are packaged and work together. They provide a solid performance boost with a low upfront cost. For an excellent 'bang for the buck' upgrade, the software and intake are a great choice (TMS Underdrive Pulleys would also be on that list).

Related Upgrades: We are often asked what would complement our software and intake packages. Within any Stage, we recommend our Underdrive Power Pulley Kits. The Power Pulley Kit will under-drive the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Under-driving means each component is moving slower which requires less power. The saved horsepower is put back to the engine where it transfers to power at the wheels. Power gains are typically 10 horsepower at the wheels.

2008-2010 E82 135i N54 Stage 1 Performance Package with aFe Dual-Cone Intake
Peak Power Gain: up to 103hp / 108ft-lbs
+ aFe Pro5R Dual Cone Intake
+ Cobb AccessPort programmer

Our Stage 1 kit features a cold-air intake kit and performance software for a staggering increase in power and torque on the N54 motor. We offer this package with the aFe Dual Cone Intake (DCI) to open up the breathing. The larger surface area of the filters allows more air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. The kit is supplied complete with aFe Pro5R filters, mounting shield, intake tubes, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions. The torque increase from low-mid RPM is sensational.

We have paired the aFe DCI with the Cobb AccessPort performance software. The Cobb software tool puts multiple tuning stages in the palm of your hand. Our Stage 1 Performance Package is aligned with the Cobb Stage 1 tuning maps (91 or 93+ octane fuel). Simply plug it in, select the Stage 1 map with your octane preference, and install. Select different maps for other upgrades, throttle settings, octane ratings, valet mode, or revert back to stock! If you're moving up in Stages simply download a new file from the Cobb website and update your AccessPort programmer! The AccessPort triples as a diagnostic tester/reader and a data logger. It's the most feature-packed programmer on the market today.

We have taken the guesswork out of choosing the best upgrades for the N54 engine. If you follow the upgrade path we have laid out you will have very satisfying and reliable results. This Stage 1 package is a great 'bang for the buck' upgrade - this power kit makes more power and torque at every RPM and makes a fantastic snarling sound every time you dip into the throttle. Note that peak power gains are quoted above but this package has even bigger performance gains in the lower RPM!

1993-94 E36 325i/is Stage 1 Performance Package
Peak Power Gain: +27hp / +25ft-lbs
Rev limit: 7000
Octane: 91 or higher

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and performance software. The aFe cold air intake is made with heat-blocking materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe uses an oiled air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Our TMS Performance Chips were also developed by Jim Conforti. The chip is the safest and easiest way to get big power from your engine. Our chips require premium fuel (91 or higher) and allow us to alter the settings on the engine management. Because we can be more aggressive in our tuning, we can get a lot of horsepower for very little money.

Within any Stage, we recommend our Underdrive Power Pulley Kits and a cat-back exhaust. The Power Pulley Kit will under-drive the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Under-driving means each component is moving slower which requires less power. The saved horsepower is put back to the engine where it transfers to power at the wheels. Power gains are typically 10 horsepower at the wheels.

We also recommend upgrading the cat-back muffler for slightly more performance, lighter weight, and a more-aggressive sound. Our favorite E36 M3 mufflers are the Supersprint, Borla, or Corsa exhausts. The Supersprint is the quietest and most like stock while the Corsa is the most aggressive (Borla being in the middle). You can expect a gain of 5whp with any of these exhausts.

Peak Power Gain: up to 107hp / 110ft-lbs
+ aFe Pro5R SI Sealed Intake
+ Cobb AccessPort programmer

Our Stage 1 kit features a cold-air intake kit and performance software for a staggering increase in power and torque. This premium package is offered with the aFe Elite Intake and Cobb AccessPort tuner. The Elite intake kit completely maximizes airflow - drawing in air from grille-mounted ducts for a 'ram-air' effect. Each duct flows through a channel into the airbox where it meets a aFe Pro5R filter designed especially for this application. This is our favorite system for the 335 as it is very well engineered, fits well, and almost looks factory. There are no open filter elements to get loaded with dirt. The kit is supplied complete with an aFe Pro5R filter, airbox, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions. The torque increase from low-mid RPM is sensational.

We have paired the aFe Elite with the Cobb AccessPort performance software. The Cobb software tool puts multiple tuning stages in the palm of your hand. Our Stage 1 Performance Package is aligned with the Cobb Stage 1 tuning map. Simply plug it in, select the Stage 1 map with your octane preference, and install. Select different maps for other upgrades, throttle settings, octane ratings, valet mode, or revert back to stock! More power = more heat. It's easy to make more power one time but to continue making that power consistently requires careful planning and design. With the additional boost the air entering the engine is also warmer, making the intercooler more important than ever. In testing, the stock BMW intercooler was quickly overwhelmed and cannot keep the intake air cool enough. The engine computer recognizes that and dials back the boost. A more efficient intercooler will keep boost levels up, delivering consistently higher boost levels. The Stage 1+ package includes a Wagner Evo I plug and play intercooler upgrade. We get great feedback from our customers and technicians about the Wagner FMIC - it's a direct bolt in part using all of the factory piping and it offers 85% more surface area than the factory intercooler.

The aFe Dual Cone intake and Cobb Accessport programmer complete the Stage 1+ package. The larger surface area of the aFe cone filters allows more air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. The kit is supplied complete with aFe Pro5R filters, mounting shield, intake tubes, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions. The torque increase and sound from the open intake from low-mid RPM is sensational.

The Cobb software tool puts multiple tuning stages in the palm of your hand. Our Stage 1+ package lines up with the Cobb Stage 1 tuning maps for an intake and FMIC (91 or 93+ octane fuel). Simply download the Stage 1+ map from the Cobb website, plug it in, and install. Select different maps for other upgrades, throttle settings, octane ratings, valet mode, or revert back to stock! We have taken the guesswork out of choosing the best upgrades for the N54 engine. If you follow the upgrade path we have laid out you will have very satisfying and reliable results. The addition of the larger intercooler makes Stage 1 more enjoyable and won't let you down at the track or dragstrip. * Note that peak power gains are quoted remain the same as Stage 1 but the cooler intake air means there is less of a chance the engine computer will cut power from heatsoak.

MORE POWER, BETTER DRIVEABILITY, LESS HEAT SOAK!
Max HP gain up to = 56+ hp
Max Trq gain up to = 82+ ft-lbs

Decades of tuning for the street and track has helped us understand what's important to the BMW tuning community - highly effective, reliable, consistent performance tuning that heightens the BMW driving experience. In order to build on this success, our calibrator dedicated months of testing, tuning, and re-testing our 2013 F30 328i on our in-house Mustang dyno to ensure we were delivering a tuning and intake/intercooler package that works seamlessly with stock hardware, while also offering the ability to capitalize on the additional engine power to be found through common modifications to exhaust.

Our Stage 3 tune package is designed for owners looking to safely maximize N20 power. Our 328i saw max gains of +56 horsepower, +82 ft/lbs torque with an Injen Evolution intake, Turner Motorsport Stepped Intercooler, Wagner downpipe, and Supersprint muffler. This package includes an Injen intake, Turner intercooler, and Wagner downpipe - leaving your exhaust up to you (there are so many good options!)

We particularly like the Injen Evolution intake for a few key reasons: it utilizes the factory cold-air duct to pull cooler air from behind the bumper, offers a great intake tone, and offers a cohesive appearance with excellent fitment. Further still, it flows very well.

Our Turner Motorsport Stepped Intercooler offers a whopping 56% increase in surface and cross-sectional and frontal area, while our testing indicated a whopping 140 degree temperature drop (versus 95 degrees with the stock intercooler). We particularly like the Injen Evolution intake for a few key reasons: it utilizes the factory cold-air duct to pull cooler air from behind the bumper, offers a great intake tone, and offers a cohesive appearance with excellent fitment. Further still, it flows very well.

Wagner's downpipe not only flows well, but it is very efficient at scrubbing the exhaust - efficient enough to ensure all sensors set readiness on our 328i test car.

Our N20 tunes all also remove the factory speed limiter and all three stages are designed to accommodate either 91 or 93 octane fuel - your car will compensate for lower octane, and will make more power with 93.

What are people saying?
Following shop, road, and track testing, a team of local N20 owners ran their variety of cars through the gamut of hard street miles. Here's some of the unsolicited feedback we received:

"Car feels like it has "woken up". Throttle response is greatly improved, and acceleration is more instantaneous in passing situations. You no longer feel like you have to bury the pedal to get the car moving. Early articles on the F30 N20 often referred to it as a aEURoemomentumaEUR car on the track and needing to keep speed up. I think the tune goes a long way to correct/improve on this."

Yet another tester removed a popular piggyback module to instead test our tune, and was also pleased:

"I have a P3 OBD2 gauge, and have messed around with it a little bit, so I figured I would include some of those numbers I noticed in my short test tonight too. I have always been a little skeptical of the 0-60 time accuracy, but at least with conditions being somewhat similar it gives an idea of the difference in raw numbers. My 0-60 time with launch control was about 5.3/5.4 seconds, whereas it was closer to 5.6/5.7 with the [competitor] in Race under similar conditions."

Even today's modern piggyback tuner options can't equal the driveability and smoothness of our ECU flash - as testers began to pass miles in the drivers seat, we received feedback from more than a few that were impressed with not just the impressive power increases, but as well the smoothness of the tune and significantly reduced turbo lag.

How do I get my tune?
Easily, and in your own garage or driveway. We mail you a DIY flashing tool and step-by-step instructions, you download your stock tune using a Windows laptop, and upload it to us while also answering a few easy questions. We quickly get to work creating your tune and email it back to you, for you to install (by following easy step-by-step instructions) at your convenience. There is no downtime - you can still drive your car while we process your tune. See install and tuning instructions here, and access the latest install licenses.

What else do I need to know?
Maintenance. The key to building a high performance machine is regular maintenance and upkeep. We've found regular ignition system service to be of significant importance - replace your spark plugs at 25,000 mile intervals for best results, and replace your ignition coils with every other spark plug replacement.

Dealer service. After tuning, there's the possibility your local dealer may over-write your tune if they update your engine's software. This simply requires reloading of the Turner tune after your service visit. We find many dealers to be accommodating of our software - simply letting your service adviser know your car has been tuned is often enough to avoid an unnecessary software update.

BMW warranty. Generally speaking, a car manufacturer cannot legally void your warranty for adding non-stock equipment - read more here.
