BMW Shark Injector Performance Software, 1996-2005 Models

The Shark Injector is an amazing hand-held unit that plugs into your car’s diagnostic port and re-flashes the computer with performance software. The software was developed by renowned BMW tuner Jim Conforti, who has nearly 20 years of BMW engine tuning experience. The Shark Injector is one of the safest and most cost-effective enhancements you can do – offering features and results that other upgrades simply cannot touch. The Shark Injector will also be upgrade-able through its own USB port, allowing you to upgrade to different software as your needs and modifications change (under development).

This software is a major refinement of the stock software. It makes the car much easier to drive with less hesitation, more torque, and incredibly smooth operation. A lot of tuning has been done at the low RPM ranges to improve response. The car won’t hesitate or lag, making the car easier to drive. And with the extra torque you can drive in a higher gear and not have to downshift as often. Theoretically this means better fuel mileage too!

How does it work? The Shark Injector makes changes to the stock BMW software in the areas of fuel enrichment, transition fueling, camshaft timing, ignition timing, and VANOS control to take full advantage of 91+ octane fuel. BMW ‘de-tuned’ cars for the North American market in the event inferior fuel was used. We reverse those changes to gain more horsepower and torque. 91 or higher octane fuel must be used.

How does it install? The Shark Injector plugs into your car’s On Board Diagnostic (OBD) port, located under the dashboard in most cars. At the push of a button the Injector begins communicating with your car’s computer. The Shark handles everything from that point on – reading and copying the stock software, re-loading its own performance version, and checking its work along the way. The whole operation is completed in under 20 minutes. A battery charger with a continuous 10-20amp charge is required (available below if you do not currently own one). Performance software is a must-have upgrade on your MZ3 and you won't find an easier and better software solution than the Shark Injector. Developed by BMW tuning expert Jim Conforti, this device plugs into the car's diagnostic port and flashes new performance files into your car's engine computer (ECU). There's no removal of the ECU and shipping, no cables, no laptop required - only a battery charger! Installation takes just a few minutes and your engine will perform like never before!

The MZ3 performance software was developed on the dyno to create maximum power and torque using premium 91+ octane fuel and revising the torque limiters in the ECU. The software makes changes to the ECU's maps and algorithms for fuel injection, ignition timing, VANOS and camshaft movement, and transitional fueling. We modify the maps for part throttle and full throttle so you get better response and more torque at all RPM. Choose between a stock or raised 8,100 RPM rev limit. The top speed limiter is removed. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S54 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine.

The Shark Injector plugs into the diagnostic port inside the Z3 cabin. With the battery charger supplying power, press the Upgrade button and within minutes the ECU is reflashed with the new performance tune. No other software product on the market comes close to how easy it is to install. You can use the Restore button to re-install the stock BMW software at any time. Detailed instructions are included. Other tuners require you to remove the ECU and ship it to them or use a laptop to read and write a new file. The Shark Injector is ready to install right out of the box! A planned future upgrade will allow you to use the USB port to load different performance files.

Octane. Choose either 91 or 93 minimum octane. For 93 we can be more aggressive with the timing and get more power. But you must have 93+ octane available, using the 93 version with anything less is not recommended.
Rev Limit. Choose a stock 7,600 RPM or raised 8,100 RPM rev limit. The raised rev limit is great for track or autocross where you can stay in gear longer and avoid untimely upshifts. The stock rev limit is for the non-track customer who wants all of the other benefits without the need to rev beyond the stock setting.
DSC/Sport Mode. This is a great option for MZ3 owners since the car did not come with a Sport button. Turning DSC off will enable the hidden Sport Mode in the MZ3!

Stage 3+ Performance Software for E36 M3 (M50 Manifold + Cam Kit)

Conforti Shark Injector performance software tuned for the an awesome OBD2 package: M50 manifold, Schrick camshafts, "24lb" injectors, Porsche 3.5" HFM, and intake. This software makes full use of the benefits of the M50 manifold when used with cams and the HFM/intake. Without the software, you're not getting the full effect of these upgrades in the upper rev range. The stock software -- or a regular Shark Injector -- is tuned for low-end torque using the stock manifold and cams. It's like a marathon runner in a 40-yard dash -- he'll put in a good effort but won't be the quickest! Special attention was paid to the low-end and mid-range too so that torque was not lost with the M50 manifold.

With this software you will notice more top end power, a broader torque band, and a smoother running engine. The rev limit is raised to 7000 RPM with the top speed limiter removed. Works with 91 or higher octane fuel.

Required:
"24lb" injectors (actually around 26lb injectors when used at the S52's 3.5 bar of fuel pressure). You must confirm the injector flow-rate at 3.5 bar before using this software. If the injectors were not purchased from us, we may as for the Bosch part number on your injectors.
Porsche 809 3.5" HFM (0 280 217 809) (TMS/Porsche HFM works best) with intake. Note: this will not work with a Euro HFM, 540 HFM, or Dinan HFM. Our software is programmed and written specifically for the Porsche 809 HFM! If you did not purchase the HFM Kit from us, we may ask you for the Bosch part number from your HFM.

The stock software artificially limits torque output, especially in the first three gears. We raised the torque limiters in all gears so there is more torque available. We used several E39 M5s on our dyno to establish what the average/typical power numbers are. The dyno charts on the right are from the same car - a 2003 E39 M5 that was already equipped with intakes, mufflers, and running 93 octane. For our Shark Injector dynos we made baseline runs with the stock software and then runs in 3rd gear and 4th gear. The only changes to the car was the Shark Injector software. Why did we post dyno runs in different gears? The 3rd gear run shows the torque gain with the new torque limiters in the software. The 4th gear run is posted to be consistent with the industry-standard of dyno-ing cars in 4th gear. Note: comparing dyno results and wheel horsepower numbers from one shop to another is not advised. What really matters is the gain from stock to modified from the same car on the same dyno.

Product Options:
Octane. Choose either 91 or 93 minimum octane. For 93 we can be more aggressive with the timing and get more power. But you must have 93+ octane available, using the 93 version with anything less is not recommended.
Throttle Setting. Choose an aggressive throttle response or a smoother, linear setting. The Shark enhanced throttle will be much quicker and more in line with the Motorsport inspiration of the M5. The Euro throttle is more linear in response and smoother than the stock US or Shark throttle. The Euro throttle is also known as the 'M5Board tune'. Our customers are split 50/50 so there is no "best throttle" mapping - it's personal preference. Note: Euro throttle option also includes software to disable SAI monitoring.

Stage 4+ Performance Software for E36 M3, MZ3 (M50 Manifold + Cams + Headers Kit)

Conforti Shark Injector performance software tuned for the an awesome OBD2 package: M50 manifold, Schrick camshafts, performance headers, "24lb" injectors, Porsche 809 3.5" HFM, and intake. This software makes full use of the benefits of the M50 manifold when used with cams and the HFM/intake. Without the software, you're not getting the full effect of these upgrades in the upper rev range. The stock software -- or a regular Shark Injector -- is tuned for low-end torque using the stock manifold and cams. It's like a marathon runner in a 40-yard dash -- he'll put in a good effort but won't be the quickest! Special attention was paid to the low-end andmid-range too so that torque was not lost with the M50 manifold.

With this software you will notice more top end power, a broader torque band, and a smoother running engine. The rev limit is raised to 7000 RPM with the top speed limiter removed. Works with 91 or higher octane fuel.

Required:
"24lb" injectors (actually around 26lb injectors when used at the S52's 3.5 bar of fuel pressure). You must confirm the injector flow-rate at 3.5 bar before using this software. If the injectors were not purchased from us, we may as for the Bosch part number on your injectors.
Porsche 809 3.5" HFM (0 280 217 809) (TMS/Porsche HFM works best) with intake. Note: this will not work with a Euro HFM, 540 HFM, or Dinan HFM. If you're planning on using the Shark Injector to add performance engine software to your BMW, a battery charger such as this one is required. The charger supplements the vehicle battery and provides uninterrupted power during the flashing process. This charger comes with a 20A boost mode for 30 minutes which should be enough time to complete the Shark Injector installation. Other chargers with manual power and timer controls are also acceptable (most shops will have a suitable charger for flashing vehicles).

    Stage 4 Performance Software for E36 M3 (Turner HFM + Cams + Headers Kit)

    Conforti Shark Injector performance software tuned for our Stage 4 OBD2 package: Schrick camshafts, performance headers, "24lb" injectors, Porsche 809 3.5" HFM, and intake. This software is tuned around the stock S52 intake manifold. For keeping the most useable torque we recommend using the stock manifold over the M50 part.

    With this software you will notice more top end power, a broader torque band, and a smoother running engine. The rev limit is raised to 7000 RPM with the top speed limiter removed. Works with 91 or higher octane fuel.

    Required:
    "24lb" injectors (actually around 26lb injectors when used at the S52's 3.5 bar of fuel pressure). You must confirm the injector flow-rate at 3.5 bar before using this software. If the injectors were not purchased from us, we may as for the Bosch part number on your injectors.
    Porsche 809 3.5" HFM (0 280 217 809) (TMS/Porsche HFM works best) with intake. Note: this will not work with a Euro HFM, 540 HFM, or Dinan HFM. Our software is programmed and written specifically for the Porsche 809 HFM! If you did not purchase the HFM Kit from us, we may ask you for the Bosch part number from your HFM.

The stock software artificially limits torque output, especially in the first three gears. We raised the torque limiters in all gears so there is more torque available. You will see an immediate difference as soon as you leave your driveway! Choose between a stock 7,000 or raised 7,400 RPM rev limit. The top speed limiter is removed. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S62 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine.

    We used several E39 M5s on our dyno to establish what the average/typical power numbers are. The dyno charts on the right are from the same car - a 2003 E39 M5 that was already equipped with intakes, mufflers, and running 93 octane. For our Shark Injector dynos we made baseline runs with the stock software and then runs in 3rd gear and 4th gear. The only changes to the car was the Shark Injector software. Why did we post dyno runs in different gears? The 3rd gear run shows the torque gain with the new torque limiters in the software. The 4th gear run is posted to be consistent with the industry-standard of dyno-ing cars in 4th gear. Note: comparing dyno results and wheel horsepower numbers from one shop to another is not advised. What really matters is the gain from stock to modified from the same car on the same dyno.

    There are multiple versions of stock ZHP software and BMW used different rev limits in some of them. A ZHP automatic will always have a lower rev limit than a manual in the interest of preserving the automatic transmission. Our engine software will alter the rev limit set in the ECU but other limits in the auto transmission programming will maintain the factory rev limit. Manual ZHPs have stock rev limits that vary - some are set as high as 6920 by the factory software. The Shark ZHP software sets all manual tranmission rev limits to 6920.

    Stage 3 Performance Software for E36 M3, MZ3 (HFM/Cam Kit) (stock S52 manifold)

    Conforti Shark Injector performance software tuned for our Stage 3 OBD2 package: Schrick camshafts, "24lb" injectors, Porsche 3.5" HFM, and intake. This software is tuned around the stock S52 intake manifold. For keeping the most useable torque we recommend using the stock manifold over the M50 part.

    Does your 325 have the M56 "SULEV" Engine? Many of the 325's produced for the US -- particularly in California, Massachusetts, and a few other states -- came with a different engine, the M56 which meets "SULEV" (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) emissions classification. A visual inspection of your engine (as shown below) is the best way to determine if your 325 has the M56 SULEV engine.

We modify the maps for part throttle and full throttle so you get better response and more torque at all RPM. The stock software artificially limits torque output, especially in the first three gears. We raised the torque limiters in all gears so there is more torque available. You will see an immediate difference as soon as you leave your driveway! Choose between a stock 7,000 or raised 7,400 RPM rev limit. The top speed limiter is removed. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S62 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine.

    We used several E39 M5s on our dyno to establish what the average/typical power numbers are. The dyno charts on the right are from the same car - a 2003 E39 M5 that was already equipped with intakes, mufflers, and running 93 octane. For our Shark Injector dynos we made baseline runs with the stock software and then runs in 3rd gear and 4th gear. The only changes to the car was the Shark Injector software. Why did we post dyno runs in different gears? The 3rd gear run shows the torque gain with the new torque limiters in the software. The 4th gear run is posted to be consistent with the industry-standard of dyno-ing cars in 4th gear. Note: comparing dyno results and wheel horsepower numbers from one shop to another is not advised. What really matters is the gain from stock to modified from the same car on the same dyno.

    Product Options
    Octane: Choose either 91 or 93 minimum octane. For 93 we can be more aggressive with the timing and get more power. But you must have 93+ octane available, using the 93 version with anything less is not recommended. 
    Throttle Setting: Choose an aggressive throttle response or a smoother, linear setting. The Shark enhanced throttle will be much quicker and more in line with the Motorsport inspiration of the M5. The Euro throttle is more linear in response and smoother than the stock US or Shark throttle. The Euro throttle is also known as the 'M5Board tune'. Our customers are split 50/50 so there is no "best throttle" mapping - it's personal preference. 
    Rev Limit: Choose a stock 7,000 RPM or raised 7,400 RPM rev limit. The raised rev limit is great for track or autocross where you can stay in gear longer and avoid untimely upshifts. The stock rev limit is for the non-track customer who wants all of the other benefits without the need to rev beyond the stock setting. 
    DSC/Sport Mode: This option will make Sport Mode active only when DSC is turned off. The Sport Mode button is disabled altogether so the only way to get Sport is to disable DSC.

    Porsche 809 3.5" HFM (0 280 217 809) (TMS/Porsche HFM works best) with intake. Note: this will not work with a Euro HFM, 540 HFM, or Dinan HFM. Our software is programmed and written specifically for the Porsche 809 HFM! If you did not purchase the HFM Kit from us, we may ask you for the Bosch part number from your HFM.

    Optional Speed Sensor Delete: Since this software is intended for race or track use only, there is one additional feature we can build into the programming. The Speed Sensor is built into the diff cover - an area prone to excessive heat. During endurance races or very hot track days, the sensor can malfunction or actually melt. If the engine DME does not see this signal, it will restrict RPM to 5500, obviously killing your speed! This optional Speed Sensor delete programming will tell the DME not to care if the sensor is sending a signal or not. It will set the maximum RPM to 7000 RPM electronically.

    This part alters or deletes the emissions equipment on your car. Because of this, we require a waiver of emissions compliance to be signed and sent in to TMS. You can download the waiver here.

You should not be running a larger HFM without software and injectors - you're in danger of running too lean!     * This Shark Injector will disable the flow output of the Secondary Air Injection system (SAI), an infamous flaw that affects all M5s. This software will prevent fault codes and check engine lights due to blockages of the SAI system due to carbon build-up. One of the causes of SAI faults is when the ECU detects low output from the air pump. The Shark software will no longer monitor the output of the pump, therefore the fault will never occur. This software does not disable the air pump altogether (necessary to preserve your catalytic converters) and does not "fix" exisiting SAI performance (you may still need a new air pump).     This performance software was developed specifically for the factory M3 Euro headers and stock Euro cats. Early in our E46 software development we found that the Euro headers and cats made a significant torque gain over the US spec but special software was needed to get the most out of them and to address some of the differences (Euro EGT sensor is in a different spot).
